Here are a few eggs that jpolk send me as part of a rock trade we made. happy.gif
Two of them are doubles, and the other two are about tennis ball sized.
It sure would be nice to know what kind of eggs they are, and where they are from before cutting them. Can anyone help me? smile.gif

Ok after some research, Im thinking Madras Oregon.
Possibly even from the old Priday Ranch. One of the best things about these eggs, are they glow strongly under a UV light. They even have a Dolly Parton bed, where they find twin eggs.

I tested these, and they also glow under UV light. biggrin.gif wub.gif happy.gif

Wooohooooo! Thanks jpolk!!
I cant wait to see whats inside them.

That is an amazing one Cornwall! You should see it in hand, you can really see into it clearly.
It has great colors!

Some of the Thundereggs have been on the flat lap being worked.
Here is a pic of them in water to get the rough grit off.
Its time to polish these babies up some.
I know someone that would love to have a few, and they are coming out to dig in May. happy.gif
I hear they are fond of blue ones, and some of these have great blues.

Here's a close up of a wee purty one we polished previously.

It's a fairly flashy lil' buggar and I am doing an experimental project with it (more on the "egg mutilation" as Mrs.CP puts it later) tongue.gif ......but this pic is sure pretty.
Looks to me like it's a sat image.......be the first one ever! laugh.gif
Ma' nature preserved this image for us detailing what looks to be a large lake area surrounded by huge mountains. The white/red tad pole looking mark would be a large aluvial fan tail with the red droplet being the large cache of gold waiting to be harvested! ohmy.gif Now..........If we can just figure out where the heck this is!? blink.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Gads...........guess it's gold fever! tongue.gif

Enjoy

Thick shelled lil' buggars too! tongue.gif But they sure are pretty at the candy centers inside. biggrin.gif happy.gif
We will get some of those pics in here soon as well.

Thanks Scott.

This is a close up of my favorite one that we polished.
It has beautiful blue bandings!!
Hard to tell in the picture but the upper right part of the white looking patch is actually pink. The patch area looks like a heart, and the top of it has red and orange.........and a couple of flowers to the left of it....hehe
Sure turned out pretty, and Dans cut was perfect! happy.gif

Did you know ThunderEggs are Oregons state rock.

Here is a close up of the darker one. This picture really doesnt do this egg justice. When you move it around...It has this goldish brown looking sheen to it in spots.
Very cool Thunderegg!

Sounds like Carol is so happy about finally seeing what was inside her ThunderEggs, she is sending the rest for us to cut and polish. happy.gif

This time Im going to video tape them being cut and opened by Dan for the first time....
This should be fun!

More pics of those neat Oregon doubles above coming soon. Even the broken one is going to put out some killer stones and or guitar picks. music017.gif

Another popular and world known egg bed is the Baker Pit near Deming, NM............this week we received a few from NM Jack as a donation in support of the CP site and club. Thank you Jack!
He will be getting some of the nicest ones back once cutting and polishing is completed here in the CP lapidary workshop. chores041.gif

So, for those of you who like the T-eggs.........keep your eyes on this thread and the Miners Market for them to be appearing soon.

For now though, we have put together a short video of one of the best from the first 3 cut. It's always fun to see what's inside for that first light so to speak when it's first cut open. Shouldn't take long to download being only a bit over 2.75 minutes long.
View/download here
Attached File  ThundereggCutting1.wmv ( 7.91MB ) Number of downloads: 375

And a quick pic before it's off to the CP flat lap area. Looks like stalactites if I'm reading the deposit layer right in this one.
bop.gif Should polish out really spiffy!!
Attached Image

More cutting to be continued............soon! chores017.gif

Here is a link to a gallery of my Oregon/Idaho Thunder Eggs.

Welcome to the CP site pebblepupdotcom, if you like the thundereggs you will find many pages, pics, and info around here about them. We kinda' like em' too. excited.gif Make yourself right at home browsing around. Checked out some of your egg pics too.....very nice!
We all look forward to seeing some posts about your adventures.

Here's a pic from the webcam with another of the Baker pit eggs cut. Was actually cracked open on one side, lower 2, but still will produce (after unscrambling jawdrop.gif ) a nice half egg, plus a really cool guitar pick and a heart carving. All showing the very cool "dancing bands".

Attached Image

More pics coming soon.................

PPPSSSSSTTTTTT Hey Jack............ poke.gif

Was able to go out yesterday and chop a few chores017.gif When I noticed on the 3rd egg the temp was 6 degrees. happy070.gif
Even though the saw, coolant and rocks didn't seem to mind, the saw operator was thinkin'.......am I nuts?! I'm goin' inside. laugh.gif
Was well worth it though. Us crazy folks do this for a reason, maybe for things like this?

Happy day and Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy the holiday colors on this shadow banded beauty.

chin.gif where did I put that pic anyways? bash.gif laugh.gif

excited.gif It's all in the anticipation....... biggrin.gif music037.gif

OK OK here it is biggrin.gif atomic.gif Right off the saw so still has some work to go but whew.

Here is another pic of the pick (pun intended) laugh.gif but you can see the killer shadow bands in that one too.

Thanks Jack I do try to be very careful when hand cutting. I did have a 500 watt halogen on to bust the chill in the shed whiched helped smile.gif and fortunately I didn't have my mits in the fluid the whole time, these I'm cutting on the 8" saw with a vise and clock feed. Just have to stay out for part of the time it cuts. wink.gif

Thanks Gat and Jim, that is a cool one isn't it. Ya' just never know what's gonna pop outta these lil' beauties.

The egg man... who me dear? blush.gif happy.gif Well lets just see shall we chores017.gif One of the shed saw draw backs during winter time though......... To get in the saw shed, first theres all these ice crystals to shovel! bash.gif laugh.gif char060.gif

So here is the one Denise is holding above after it's visit to the saw. Shown wet in this pic right after cutting, should polish out really nicely. Sure hope we don't break none of the tiny tip stacks! ohmy.gif Pic is large size for detail, just click on the thumbnail image for the full size pic. Love that new feature! biggrin.gif

cloud9.gif Baker Thundereggs sure are fantastic! Dan cut one open the other day that freaked Timmy out some.....hehe
It apparently had a fluid pocket inside it, so when it was cut open it had a empty soft looking "egg shell" like skin indide.
The look on his little face was priceless ( mellow.gif jawdrop.gif ) Next question was "What was inside that one, and where did it go???!!! (as hes looking around)
biggrin.gif
Heres where it got fun.... (mom loves to tease and have fun) poke.gif
I said, "well Im not sure, but look at this spot"
He moves in to look close, and I growl...."GRRRRRR".
He jumped sky high....hehe I know, Im cruel. wink.gif
After a bit of scolding from him, I told him it was just fluid (very very old fluid) that drained out when it was being cut.
Sure is a cool looking egg. The skin like film still isnt hard yet, so were being careful with it.
Not a good one, but heres a picture of it.

This NM Baker egg turned out really interesting Jack!
The left side is AMAZING! The formation on that side almost looks like a snowy tree...hehe
The right side of the egg seems to be a Jasper, but the lighter part is almost clay like. Really soft, I can even pick it out with my fingernail. This one will be interesting to see how it polishes out. We are going to experiment with a different Baker egg that has the same extra soft clay like center. Lets see what we get when we blast out the soft center. unsure.gif

Here is a closer look at the egg on the left.

That last T-egg had a soft white almost chalky material as you see in the last post, notice I said "had".......we've cleaned that material out and we will update with a new pic soon. Pretty cool and now can be polished off without worry of grit contamination. happy088.gif

Now onto this next egg which we recorded on video. About 40 minutes or so condensed down to 9 minutes. Grab a cup of coffee and see how this one turns out.
ThunderEgg Cutting 2

Here's a pic of the T-egg prior to the cutting. Want to see what's inside? excited.gif chores017.gif Check out the video link above. cool.gif

The flat lap machine's been churnin' and burnin' so keep an eye out for the finished polishes soon too!

smiley-shocked003.gif Wow! Look what happened to the "experimental egg" Dan blasted the soft center out of.
Amazing looking, and the remaining surfaces polished out great. Good job Dan! Saved that egg by revealing it's inner beauty.

Thank you Denise, I'm glad we decided to blast it out too. Turned out really nicely.

Here are a few more recent T-egg's from the CP lapidary shop..........Enjoy. These and more will be steamin' into the Miners Market station very soon. emoticon-object-009.gif
Keep an eye on the "specimens" section, we will also be introducing a really neat new product. chaplin.gif

This one is another killer Baker pit egg. We originally planned on one half to polish and slicing the other half, but after a couple slices we decided to keep the busted half for a polisher too. smile.gif The blues are just amazing and the reds are vivid! cool.gif

Another Baker pit egg with a nice little quartz crystal pocket. See the nifty rainbow colored twinkles? happy.gif

And this one is from Mexico with a sweet white/gray color pattern and a nice crystal pocket. wink.gif

Hail and rain make for some good "motivation" to get things done.

However, lightning gives rise to thunder and that's a good sign that it is time to take shelter, especially in South Park!

biggrin.gif Right, gotta stop when the lightning is rolling through. We aren't in south park now but still.........don't wanna push my luck with ma nature. smile.gif

Here's one I recently got cut (between lightning storms chores017.gif ) that turned out with a nice star pattern and crystal pocket in the doublet.....just a quick snap of the webcam so details aren't great yet, more detailed pics coming later. This is from a new batch of priday bed thundereggs in Oregon. a few have had some cracked up opal in them but most are very nice formations.......nice blue hues and shades of ornanges and reds with clear.
This particular one looks like the crystal pocket might be amethyst.......hard to tell true color prior to polishing but WOW smiley-shocked003.gif that will be cool!!

Tiny clear quartz crystals making up the druzy pocket. With the agate underneath being red, it gives the appearance that the crystals are also red. There are even a few spots that have a black layer underneath, making some of the crystals looks like smokey quartz.
happy088.gif

That egg is definately a keeper, especially with its dancing shadow bands!

I'm cracked? jawdrop.gif Ok maybe a little. But what's this mine, mine, mine stuff? rolleyes.gif Darn woman is outta' control! smiley-laughing021.gif Those last two red ones really are nice though, makes the hair on your neck stand up. Or maybe that's the pair of eyes looking at me that's causin' the hair thing. laught16.gif

We've been cutting up a few more of these hidden beauties chores017.gif and have another short video put together for everyone. Watch as we start with locking down the doublet Oregon Priday thunderegg to be cut and get the first glimpse peek at the treasure.
Just a tad over 5 minutes long but in real time was closer to 45 minutes on the saw.
ThunderEgg Cutting 3
Folks are always so suprised at how cool the insides are compared to the ugly ol' outter shells, but it's easy to see why when they are cut.

Grab a beverage while the video loads up and enjoy everyone!

The flat lap is still working hard and rough stages are nearly completed. happy088.gif
Here is one of the Oregon double thundereggs that is really cool. signs021.gif Completely solid on one side with tube agate on the large side. The chalcedony/agate shells over the tubes are very solid and this will be one spiffy t-egg when finished! drool.gif char098.gif

A closer look at one half for a bit better details. biggrin.gif Pic is left large size so you can click on it and see the full sized image.
Kinda' looks like a moon with tentacles hanging out in there.

Here is a close up of both halves of a scrambled egg, before it was blown out with the pressure gun.
This center stuff is way too soft and crumbly when it dries to leave for polishing. Sure is cool looking though!
Pics of it after it was blown out and polished coming soon. Amazing how different it looks.

Yep, that is a Baker thunderegg, but now it's been blasted out clean and is polished out to a mirror shine.
smile.gif It looks stunning with the red/pink druzy and cool reds/oranges around the agate and in the shell agate pockets.

The rest are still on polish stages but they are getting close to finished.....and WOWSER! There are some really cool new ones coming up so keep your eyes open for those to be posted.

Here is a picture of the two halves after blowing the soft stuff out with the prerssure gun.
It almost looks velvety soft, but NOT! biggrin.gif Like tiny little crystals.

This Oregon double thunderegg is fantastic!.....Like night and day from one side to the other.
I left the image big so you can click it and view the larger photo for a more detailed view.
Enjoy! cloud9.gif

What do you do when you cut one and notice fractures through the face? sad.gif chin.gif
Keep cutting! You will be amazed at the workable material you get that will make some amazing creations. Being a protector of all thundereggs good wink.gif , I like to make sure there isnt much waste when we cut them. smile.gif

Here are the end cuts from a beautiful NM Baker thunderegg, that when cut had fractures in it. Is it me or does anyone else see a howling wolf in the one on the left, and a butterfly in the one on the right? I see carvings going on for these. chores041.gif

Attached Image

Here is a nice slab that came from the same egg, with just a few small fractures along the edge!
See the nice little crystal heart surrounded by red agate?

Attached Image

"Several other pieces from this egg that are going to make some beautiful creations", Dan says as he prys pieces from my hand. smiley-laughing021.gif He can show you pics of those slabs.

I was in White Sands for the Bataan Memorial Death March (a 26.2 mile marathon in uniform with a 35 pound pack) and had a free day the day prior, so I headed over to Rock Hound State Park ( http://www.stateparks.com/rock_hound_state_park_in_new_mexico.html ), near Deming NM, to see what I could find. "Thunderegg Trail" sounded like a great place to explore!

There was lots of Jasper about... being a rookie in that neck of the woods, unfortunately I wasted an hour or two chiseling out some small bits at the bottom of the trail when I should have been up looking for cooler stuff. Found lots of little bits of Jasper and a bunch of what I think would still be classified as thundereggs; little round nodules on rock that I chiseled off. Then I found a pocket of soft material and pulled out a nice sized stand alone one.

Not sure spending 6 hours scrambling around the hills, getting sunburned and packing out rocks was the smartest thing to do the day prior to the event, but I had fun! Will definitely get back down there and do some more exploring some day!

Here are a few crappy cell phone pics of what I found. Now I just gotta figure out what to do with them.

Very cool Crusty! I would like to make it out to the Rock Hound State park someday also. Bet there are some great spots off the beaten path unclaimed and ready to be dug as well. drool.gif emoticon-misc-004.gif

Looks like possibly some sweet finds but I really can't tell by those pictures. You're killing me here!!...... excited.gif ....I really would like to see some better pictures from that nicer camera you have. poke.gif biggrin.gif Looks like even the broken ones have something to show. The wee ones are my favorite!! Bet those are really cool inside!

(Has sudden urge to dig Thunder eggs)
