Hi All! My wife and I just moved to Fort Garland in the San Luis Valley. We enjoyed rockhounding back east in North Carolina and Tennessee. Are there are good rockhounding locations in or around the San Luis Valley? We enjoy all gems and minerals.

Hi Scott, I too am a NC transport. I live on the Western Slope now. I think there are some good areas around hwy 114. I know you can find Appachee tears near Cochepetta dome. And I think there are some good geode spots closer to you. There is gold in the sand dunes but you can't prospect there. Parlin pegmatite is a good spot to find some cool stuff. Lots of other areas near Salida too.

Scott Scott: I like to work in the Bonanza Caldera that isn't too far from Fort Garland. Much of the area is public land and easily accessible about 15 to 20 miles west of the town of Villa Grove. Lots of metal sulfide ore specimens, quartz crystals and interestingly there is still some fine specimens of rhodochrosite from fluorite bearing veins that have been discarded from old mining activities. Be cautious that there are still some private land inholdings and active mining claims as you rockhound the area. A good place to start out from is the public picnic area that has been built at the old Rawley Tunnel just up the county road from the Town of Bonanza. Good Luck! Hi Scott,
Welcome to Colorado and the CP website. You will have great adventures just about everywhere in the state. Rich and Johnny both gave some great starting places for you not to far of a distance. I was also recently reading about some reported turquoise in the same area Johnny was describing too......keep your eyes open when you get out there for sure. We also have a 4th of July club members outing coming up in the San Luis Valley area. Details for that can be found in the club members protected section.
