where to get my pick dirty, florida dont know much about the mountains

hello all, im visiting colorado in late feb. my girl wants to do nothing but snowboard but i wanted to get my hands dirty in colorado. im starting off in colorado springs and winding my way up to vail. are there any places i can stop and get my rocks off along the way. when i dig here in florida i just get limestone and thats no fun. thanks for your help coloradians

I'm not sure that you could pick a much tougher month to prospect in Colorado. Feb is one of our colder months and snowpack is very dense at that time.
You mentioned "pick" in your title.... what type of prospecting are you hoping to do? That may help narrow it down a little.

i figured it would be tough. really just lookin for neat lookin rocks or gems. was in west virginia couple months back diggn the side of mountain and found some nice specimens.

Hi Florida, welcome to the forum.
Yep Swizz is right, that's a tough time to find spots to dig especially the higher up you go in elevations.
You might get lucky and find some ground free of snow but that's really a stab in the dark. If you can find a spot along the way that isn't under snow and the road is still accessable....you may find a crystal or two or maybe a petrified wood or two. Keep your eyes open and good luck.
Safe travels along the way too, sounds like you'll have a great trip ahead next year.
