Went out earlier with my girlfriend and did a bit of prospecting. Got a few pics (hopefully they're attached), and the area has some interesting history.

It's called Cherokee Peak, and it's only a few miles from Rawlins. *Legal disclaimer- My understanding is there's not active claims on this mountain, per discussion with BLM technicians. I will double check this week, hopefully.*

There has been hematite, copper, and gold mined from here and radioactive rare earths as well as uranium have been found here as well as mined a short distance west and large commercial scale uranium mine 45 miles NW of here. The rock are of two different ages- Pennsyvanian and Miocene/Pliocene. The sedimentary rocks were originally laid in the Pennsyvanian age and then the Rawlins uplift at or about the Miocene/Pliocene age "cooked" and uplifted them. One formation I have positively identified is the Madison Limestone. Number of faults in the area and to this date I have located quartz, hematite, limonite, calcite, and possibly copper ore here and at Rawlins Peak. I want to say malachite, but I can be certain. I only briefly checked the specimen out.

The water course I used for panning was merely a trickle from the melting snow. Yep, my ugly mug is in here (hide your eyes and save your sanity!).

When I get a verification on the clarification of claim status, I'll decide my next actions.
Carl

Pic 8 of 8. 6 & 7 were retakes of the same stuff. This is from the hill north of where I panned looking at the site, water course and the water source. Was at one time an open pit mine, I think for hematite, but gold was mined not far from here.

Out of the two panfuls I did, I got some black sand (the stuff to get Mark ta glow for us? <grin>), but no color. I was also in a hurry as my GF was starting to get cold.

Man, she's wearing blue jeans and sweat shirt and she's getting cold. I'm wearing a sleveless t-shirt & swimming trunks and oing juuuuuust fine. Something I never could figure out.
