Jim, very cool settings. Minimalistic and creative, nice! worthy.gif

Now..... I think we need to have a chat about macro photography. You could be doing MUCH better in that department. char098.gif

Tripod + macro setting (flower icon on camera) + timer. That's basically it unless you want to get fancy.
I can tell those pick cabs are beauties and I'd like to see them in all the HD clarity and detail that mother nature intended. She didn't give me this 1080p monitor for nuthin' ya know. tongue.gif

Great work Jim! How different is it making them on the Genie? Do you think it will take less time creating a pick on the Genie?

Wow those look great. I don't know which is cooler, the black plume or the petrified wood...

I didn't know you did wire wrapping, that is tough to do I think, excellent job on them!

Yea! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif The Genie is alot faster. I've made 6 now. I sat down and made 3 more today. I worked for about 21/2 hours and made a large teardrop cab and 3 picks out of the same slab of rainbow obsidian.
Working with fresh wheels is almost like trying out a different machine. I love it!
Here's another pic. This is the 3 that I made today and one of tube agate that I did yesterday. The obsidian has only green flash in it and is hard to see in the pic.

Nice looking batch of stones Jim. chores041.gif I'll be those obsidian pieces look much better in hand too.
Those obsidian picks will make some really nice lookers but I wouldn't suggest playing with them as they'll wear quickly on the steel strings because of their softer hardness range of 5.5.

They'll make excellent canidates for wrapping in a guitar pick slip wraps like what I came up with though. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Hey CP,

I had thought the same about the obsidian (that it was a softer stone). What type of wear occurs with stone picks in that 5-6 hardness range? I ask because I have played with lexan picks almost exclusively for the past 5 years and although lexan is an extremely hard for a guitar pick, I think it's hardness is 4.5 or less. One of the reasons I like lexan picks is because I found I don't wear them down despite the aggressive styles I often play.

Is hardness a concern with stone picks in the 5.5 range due to cosmetic reasons such as damaging a nice finish on the pick?

Exactly right GuitarC, the obsidian hardness being 5.5 will make it suseptable to scratching/wearing against the steel strings which would be hardness 6.5 comparatively.
Although playing with plastic/lexan, musicians aren't suprised to see wear on those, but with stone picks, the finish could be damaged by use on steel strings if hardness is not taken into account, which is not expected to happen on a more expensive stone pick. Agates, jaspers etc in the quartz family carry just a little bit higher hardness range at 7.0 virtually eliminating any chance of wear marks from use during play.

Funny that you would mention picks. I cut one this weekend myself. The first in eons it seems. This a very nice piece of Az. wood. It had a fracture across the tip of one corner...notice the more rounded one. I had trouble keeping reflections from coming off of it. You can see my palm in one side of it.

Great looking picks and some nice work there Jim. Someday I hope to be able to cut and polish stone. For right now though I am still in the "procurement" stage. I want to make sure I will have pleanty of material to work with in my golden years. Keep up the good work, Woody.
