While we were out today exploring we found an old gold mine that had a horizontal shaft into the side of the mtn. The air coming out was fresh(didn't smell like cat pee) & we could stand up & walk in.( Do not ever do this) So in we went about 85-90ft. to a Y with a little ledge to one side. Now we're standing there trying to figure out which way to go shining my big maglite around. Up on the ledge there were 2 eyes looking back at us. They belonged to Sylvester a really biiig mtn. lion. Needless to say we went back the way we came in very fast. excited.gif

yep that would be exciting being in a old mine and VERY EXCITING seeing some eyes looking back at you! there must be another entrance that this cat comes through and giving the freash air flow.

You're right Russ there is another entrance. Just so everybody understands I did a lot of research before I went out yesterday. The rule Stay Out! Stay Alive! still applies. I've been prospecting for the last 15 years but going into old mines is still an unhealthy practice unless you have the right equipment gas monitors etc. and someone outside w/radio and even then it's risky.

In my opinion, this is a great example of a site that needs special consideration. Please dig slowly near the rock art and use a screen when working that area's overburden. The artifacts that may be found buried in the vicinity there would be very precious if they could be recovered.

Sincerely,

ASTROBLEME

WoW! that looks like and sounds like the beggining of a grand adventure. You know I'm only a few hours away( 25 yrs old) if'n ya need a little help I specialize in clearing Mtn lions out of abandon Mines. crutches.gif Regardless..... Good luck, stay safe and most important post pictures! Ha Ha- I saw a picture of one of your claims and that nice little nugget looks promising for some good times in your future. I plan on trying some highbanking around Taos this spring, if all goes as planned I also want to sample the Red river area down there. Do you have any reccomendations for Northern New Mexico, from what I read it seems like there is lots of possiblities in the area. Good diggin! music014.gif
