They try their best to behave. One was born was hydrocephalus and she's a difficult one to train. (Water on the brain) but she survived the worst of it and has seemed to have recovered aside from mental defects. I'm glad I didn't choose to put her down. :) Here's a picture of her and her dad. Don't let the pic fool ya, she's 45 lbs and her dad is 105# he's HUGE!

Darn, just realized today that we are going to lose grand old golden sooner than we thought. We were hoping to make the springtime. Life sucks today.

Thanks, Mrs CP and fenixsmom, that helps a bit.
Ginger has been with us for almost 14 years - VERY old for a large Golden. She has had a very full and good life, but now the kidneys are failing, and her hips are giving way.
Thanks for the offer - but we have 6 now, so Ginger will not/can not be replaced, even though we would enjoy having another puppy in the house. Mira and Molly (a lab, and
a labariener - or weimarlab) would not get the attention they need or deserve, so as much as I love Chessies, I have to say no. Great dogs!

I think we have about 2 weeks to a month - she's still feeling good and eating well - but the incontinence started yesterday, a very bad sign. Good day in the sun on the
porch, though. Vet visit after a bath tomorrow. I won't make a call until after that, and after Karen comes back down for the weekend.

Thanks again!

I'm sorry, Scott. Pets are our precious babies. Maybe they spend their time in heaven reminiscing about the good times while they wait for us to join them there. With all my heart, I hope that's how it works.

I completely understand your position! My heart breaks for you. The hardest part of having wonderful fur-babies is watching them head over that bridge. If you change your mind the offer stands, but absolutely no pressure. Big hugs to you and your lady. arms.gif

RhodoRose - that's what we hope too - thanks.

Fenixsmom - again, thanks, much appreciated.

Vet today at 2, then we will know more. Positive note - dry night. The day in the sun did her good, and I got up and made her go out twice during the night, and again this
morning. Hips are definitely going, though; but still doesn't need help with the steps. On the humorous side - been spoon feeding her since August. She was having a little
trouble with her stomach than and wasn't eating. Now she has a great appetite, but insists on being spoon fed! I'm a patsy, I let her con me into it. slaphead.gif laugh.gif

Scott,
I own this dog assist lift harness (Lulubear was 148lbs) and you are more than welcome to it if you need it: Dog Assist Lift Harness
It helped her a lot through the difficult times last year before it was time, especially with stairs and ice.
Just let me know and I'll send it your way bud.

Chris, thanks! I will let you know. Right now, only minor difficulties with stairs, and the main thing is getting her up to go out. She's only 84#, and only requires a little
bracing to get up, or - at most - a little assistance to get on her hind legs. Vet told me to get her down to around 75#, and she should be ok after that. The check up
went well, by the way. I will get the results of the blood lab tomorrow. Need to collect a urine sample from her in the morning, too. Wheee! Know how to do it now, too.
Not sure she approves.

Later!

Follow her around with a disposable pie pan and toss it between her legs as she squats or duct tape it to a broom handle or a stick :) (my idea came from mythbusters)

Good news so far for Ginger - no bladder stones or signs on the x-rays of cancer, but she does have arthritis in her back, from about 2 vertebras past the ribs on to her tail.
This is probably the cause of her incontinence and is the cause of her difficulties getting up, with steps, etc., especially when it's cold. Her hips are clean - no sign of
dysplasia. Hopefully, I was wrong about how soon it will be. Her kidneys are failing - they have been for years (diagnosed about 4 years ago) - and it's starting to get more
advanced, but still progressing very slowly. All good news. We need to get her down to about 75 - 76 pounds or so (84.5 right now) to ease the pressure on her back when
she gets up. Still a happy dog, too. Thanks for all the warm replies. Best to all of you!

She's doing very well, considering she had several strains of bacteria infecting her bladder - almost done with the last batch of antibiotics now. She also has arthritis in her back below her ribs - not uncommon in older dogs - and this is the main cause of the incontinence issue. That's still going on, but is MUCH reduced - mainly leakage now instead of full blown loss of control. She is fading, as older dogs do, but there is very little pain and she's very happy. Still wants to go on long walks and wants to romp - but tires quickly. I think she will make the summer, and I am keeping my fingers crossed. Low dose Rimadyl works wonders......

Your pups look great. Chris - again, these are great dogs!

Gluclosamine chondrotin (?) Works wonders for joint pain in dogs. Have you talked to her vet about joint supplements?

Sad day today, just got the news from the vet and it isn't good. Her left eye started up with a bloody discharge yesterday, and the vet says the eye orb is compromised and will need to be removed - and Ginger will be unable to survive any surgery at her age and kidney condition. The vet also suspects that it is cancer of the eye, and that it has metastasized. She will be spending one more night at the vet (where she is being well cared for) then I go to say good bye and bring her home. Argh, this is rough.

Thanks, Woody. Ginger really enjoyed our hike around the property when you came out. Tuckered her out, but she loved it. She had a few more of those before arthritis kept her close to the cabin. She will always be remembered.
