Native silver can be found by using a metal detector as it will respond just like a silver coin target. It is best to look in washes and streams downhill from high grade silver deposits.

In Colorado, most of the silver is held in mineral matrix that detectors fail to respond to. Here is an example of a 781.5 gram "nugget" of silver, lead, zinc and gold that I picked up from a small creek. The metal detector passed right over it but I saw the bright reflection in the sunlight and picked it out of the gravels.

It took a couple of days of searching but I eventually found the lode source. I staked the large quartz vein that was completely buried under broken country rock less than 1/4 mile away from the stream site!

Keep your eyes on the ground when you're working with detectors. They can miss pretty big objects if they are in the native mineral rock.
