Sweet day on the digs!
Check out some of the sweet purple Fluorite I got while out digging with Anita.

This small Fluorite plate is going to clean up nicely. After cleaning it off more, they look to be very deep purple.

It was 8 below 0 the other morning so too cold to dig right now, but good weather for staying inside to clean goodies. Here are a few more that are getting a cleaning.

After a closer look at that last plate, it seems there were a few baby blue Fluorites hiding out. Nature was kind on this dig! wub.gif

You crack me up Faaus! The blue ones are my favorite.....

Here is an amazing Fluorite Anita found and gave to Dan for his birthday several years back. Its purple on the one side, and powder blue on the other, with snow white Microcline on the bottom.
wub.gif Weighs just under 2 pounds! Sure is a pretty one!

Come on CP........Lets see its pretty blue side! Flip it around would you please?

Dear CP:

Those are certainly some nice fluorite specimens. I was laughing out loud reading about the ones with goose bumps because it was too cold. While prospecting for uranium, a couple of years ago, I came across some "hot fluorite" specimens in float as I looked for the orebody. The sandstone was impregnated with purple fluorite and uranium ore. Here's a photo of the float that I encountered and it really sets of the Geiger counter!

Very nice Johnny,

Thanks, we try to keep them warmer now though.
That sure is a "hot" purple too......don't burn your finger! biggrin.gif

So now we have hot and cold fluorites in here. happy088.gif Just don't let em' play together or the temp change could crack em both! smiley-laughing021.gif
Thanks for sharing the pic Johnny.....and how did the uranium prospecting go that year?

This one is a tiny lil Colorado fluorite we found recently in an unexpected local.
Very small and looks clear with a nice cube form and some purple or blue phantoms. So small it's hard to tell which color. cool.gif

Here is another sweet Fluorite combo specimen out of Teller county. This piece contains a big Green and pink Fluorite on the bottom, Microcline with tiny quartz crystals, a Hematite after Siderite (pseudomorph), and a sweet Amazonite on the side. Its approx. 3" long and 1 1/2" tall.

Here are a few pictures of different views. This one will clean up nicely!!! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif bop.gif

If I'm not mistaken - Double refraction. Cooler than the other side of the pillow!
What a coincidence, I just learned (last night) about this effect in my Rocks and Minerals Guide which I bought two days ago.
Not all crystals have this effect. The crystal splits light into two rays: Ordinary, which doesn't deviate and Extraordinary which shifts when the crystal is rotated.
Creates that wicked cool effect. Neat pic!!!

Great info Chris! Sounds like a good book. This Fluorite is definately a keeper! Your right, it cant be seen from all angles. The effect from the smaller Fluorite attached on the back, just popped in there when I turned it..... Along with more detail on the backside of the larger one. happy088.gif

Now one can see why Fluorites are one of my favorites!

Here is a larger example of the great green Fluorites found here in Colorado. This piece fills the palm of my hand. Lots of fractures but definately a keeper. It even has a smaller purple Fluorite under the green ones.

Speaking of fluorite, I've posted this before but some of the newbies might not have seen it.

http://golddredger.com/fluoritemine/fluorsparmine1.htm

It's since been totally reclaimed and no longer there.

I made a video of the minerals my friends and I have found rockhounding for fun. First half of the video shows Quartz, Goethite, Amozonite and Topaz. Last half shows Fluorites including some very large colorful specimens and a large smokey quartz set on feldspar.

Here is video of some of my recent Fluorite finds. The first half of them are light purple with gold colored sparkles, they have some of the best clarity and luster that I have found in the area. We are finding them with smokies and Microcline. The second half are blue with blue sparkles and phantoms inside. We are finding these with the Goethite and Quartz. There is no audio with the video, so don't stress, your speakers are likely working just fine. eating-popcorn-03.gif thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

These next few pics will likely inflame the jealousy. lol.
These are some previous finds. They have been cleaned and trimmed by the pros.
Nice to see them at a mineral show.

Wow Mike,

I'm very impressed with your Fluorite collection. I had not seen these videos before, glad I happened to look just now. It also looks like all of your Fluorite is home grown in Colorado. To me that makes them even more impressive. Nice job, keep them coming.

Something funny..... I literally just sat down to the computer to start putting together my Fluorite Collection video. I am in the process of making a video that shows the many different types and properties of Fluorite.
What a coincident. But don't worry, mine will not be as impressive as yours.

Very enjoyable, Woody.

Not only is it all from Colorado, it's all from what is now my first claim, staked earlier this year. It's the gift that keeps on giving so far. Can't wait to see your video. Here is an odd property of fluorite: When I was camping I threw some broken pieces of Fluorite in a empty chilli can and heated them on the fire. We were trying to see if we could melt them since the melting temp is very low. They melted some but they glowed a green/blue light and were amazingly bright.

Some Flourites from Pikes peak granite. They are cracked and included. But they have a wonderful lavender color, with hints of green.

Over the weekend I went up to the claim and met up with friends to search for where the topaz came from. We didn't find any more topaz but I did find a pegmatite exposure that had not been looked at yet. I worked this new pegmatite for most of the weekend and it produced a few fluorite crystals and about a hundred quartz crystals most of which were double terminated, tabular/flat and included with goethite and mica making them sparkle several different colors.

Here is my best find from the peg, a pale green fluorite with a cluster of quartz attached.

Some of the quartz crystals.

This smokey has a microcline crystal attached and a white phantom inside. The termination was a little damaged by nature.
