So my folks were cleaning out some of my old stuff from their house and they gave me an old shoebox. Inside was a bunch of rocks I collected as a kid.

One caught my eye so I did a specific gravity test and low and behold it was 3.5357. I know that specific gravity doesn't tell the whole story. So I take this stone to a gemologist or jewelry store and get it checked out. Thing weighed in at 2.97 grams. So needless to say, it probably isn't a diamond but if it is..... VEGAS BABY...

Very cool Kjelsner! It is not likely to be a diamond but it is very likely to be topaz.

It looks like a partial white saphire...it looks like it has 6 sides to the fragment, but.... Walk, do not run, to your nearest Walmart store and go the the cleaning section where they sell rust remover. If you are in luck, you will find a product there called "Whink", it is used to remove rust stains, and if you look at ingrediants, it will say "contains hydroflouric acid". This is very dangerous stuff. Dont spill any on you or breath fumes. Pour just enough into a plastic container to cover your specimen and let soak overnight. If it comes out cleaner with no etching, you probably have a diamond. If it is any other rock...crystal has Si as part of it's chemical makeup, it will become etched and look frosted. If you think it might be a topaz, zircon, saphire, etc and dont want to ruin it, then scratch corundum with it, ie. ruby, etc. If it scratches corundum and doesn't rub off, then either its a diamond or white saphire. If it leaves a white streak on corundum that rubs off, then it is softer and could be anything but saphire or diamond. Don't forget to really rinse the stone with plenty of water after soaking before handling.

looks very similar to a topaz found in Wisconsin by a friend. It had the same reddish inclusions but a bit dirtier. I shaped and polished it and man was it really exciting to watch it start to glow after every grit level. Loved working with the material. seemed to have its own light within the stone. Started my drive to find a bigger one to polish, which has led me to Colorado and this club in my searches. Nothing yet but some promising leads for sure. Would love to follow that guy from prospectors around (rich fretter?) probably spelled it wrong. But he always seemed to find just absolute beautiful specimens.
