Greetings all! I moved here to Salida a few years back and i have been wanting to get out and try my hand at prospecting/rock hounding. Ill admit; I am one of those yahoos who watched a couple episodes of "Prospectors"and thinks he has the fever. Headed to Ruby mountain today to poke around or maybe point bar to get a few pans in. Its an awesome hobby that gets me out of the house and into the hills. Im planning to join the salida prospecting club after the holidays slow down. In the meantime does anyone have any recommendations for a rookie like me to be able to increase his knowledge this winter?? Any must-read books or documentaries? i really don't know much about geology and have been looking for a "field manual" of some sort. (of course i realize that you can't just pick up a book and expect1 to know everything.....just trying to enhance my knowledge) do you suppose that would be a good place for me to start? Thanks ahead of time for the advice and thank you all for the plethora of knowledge found on this site!

Welcome to the forum!

Most important thing you can do for yourself and to respect other prospectors is to get smart on how to do your research to ensure you're not claim jumping and you're legally allowed to prospect in the area you head out to.

Great thread to start learning here: http://www.coloradoprospector.com/forums/i...?showtopic=2638

Great thing about Colorado is there is so much available within a short drive from pertty much everywhere. And there is a lot of unclaimed public land with some easy pickings and lots of great stuff with a little work. I've found quite a few great little pieces just out hiking, which led me to more stuff that I had to dig for. And with the breaks in the winter weather here, you can get out year round!

Enjoy exploring the forum!

smileywaving.gif Welcome to the CP forums SalidaZ and thank you for the compliments on the site!

Great link to give him Crusty. Make yourself at home around the website. The CP club is also a great way to learn and gain opportunities to meet up with others in the field for hands on learning. We would be honored if you decided to join the club here. happy088.gif
