Last weekend I went out riding my atv and found some strange looking rocks when I got off my atv to take a walk. I really wasn't looking for anything, just trying to loosen up my back. As I was walking around these strange looking rocks caught my eye. So I picked one up and looked at it and it looked like a flint nodule. I decided to pick a couple of them up and took them home with me when we finished riding atv's. Since I didn't have a rock saw I took a hammer and broke one up to see what it looked like inside. Well, it looked funny so I pulled out my tile saw and cut one of the small pieces. I noticed right away it was a banded agate, yeah I just busted it up into 20 pieces...ooops. The next one I decided I din't want to destroy it so I took it to a rock shop and he cut it for me. Well I was surprised by this one two, I have a picture of it. These are the first agates I ever found, never even knew what they were, now I know what to look out for. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

This is just a raw cut and is not polished.

Nice Agate 400. An awesome find. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif I was able to get a good look at tons of different types of Agate at the last Denver mineral show. This year's theme was Agate. Next year's theme will be minerals of the southwest.

What is kind of bad is these agates were in a atv trail and have been run over countless times. It is a good thing my back hurt and I had to stop to take a walk.

Love the colors, nice find! Agates are one of my favorites because you never know what you truly have till you cut it open and see. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
The thinner slices might even be transparent when held up to the light.

Really nice! Now ya just gotta git yerself a rock saw for the rest of the cool stuff you're gonna find.

Here is a picture of the Agates my mom, nephew and I found yesterday, this is just the larger ones. My nephew found the best one, I think, I won't know until I can afford a rock saw. I am just dreaming of owning a rock saw.

Very cool looking agates and good job on the finds! happy088.gif Rock saws are handy especially if you like to collect things like agates. You will find it's a chain reaction though...once you cut the rock you will then want to polish it out. slaphead.gif biggrin.gif What state are you finding these in if you don't mind me asking?

I am just itching to cut these open. I broke another one to pieces by accident by hitting it with a rock hammer, doh. We are finding them in Fremont County Colorado in the middle of a atv trail.

Well my agates are not agates, just one and a half of them are agates. I got so wound up and excited that I assumed the others were agates. I guess I should never assume anything, kind of discouraged, I basically picked up about 50 pounds in leaverites. I had two of my supposed agates cut, and they were nothing, nada, zip, just rocks I should have left right where they were. I am even $20 broker now. I did find some broken up jasper(I got expert advice on them), nothing too special, oh well, I always have my four wheeler.

BTW can somebody remove the picture of my leaverights, not too proud of them now, lol.

Well, that happens. Still, you did find one and a half, and some jasper - and even though you are down $20, it's still a win! You also know that agates are in the immediate area of where you fond them. I would keep looking.
