Pyrography is the fancy name for wood-burnin'.
I started playing with the woodburner a couple of years ago, maybe once in a blue moon on a rainy day. Basically, it's a hot pencil... just need the right tips, heat, pressure, and technique.
I just have a cheap one but will eventually upgrade to the real thing.
Anyway, my goal is to do wildlife and I might try that next on this block.
For now this is my doodlings, first try at freehanding trees/landscape. Also trying to simulate woodgrain on the tomahawk handles which actually worked out well. The practice-piece is my indoor splitting block for kindling... maybe 2ft dia X 1ft thick. It's pine and not really sanded well but ok for practice. I'm gonna try and fill it up with burnings eventually when I have time. Fun thing to do when watching baseball or football.
Anyone else into Pyrography or wanna share your work? I know Denise is a pro!

If I did something just starting out and freehand I would have to Explainnnnnn to them what that was or Explainnnnn to them what this is and there response would something like, "I kind of see it"!

I love Pyrography. I found that I wanted to take it to a higher level and add carving so it has more of a depth effect. What I do one can call Manglepyrography. Pro I'm not, but thank you for the kind compliments, I sure like to tinker in that field though.

Dan and I have been talking about sanding down our wooden dining room table and start doing some wood burning and maybe even some stones inlayed work into it. Should be fun!

Great thread. I will have to get some pics of some of my work. Most I sold without even getting pictures of....including the fox pups closeup.

Here is a piece I have keeping around for a while now. I want to remove some of the wood around the flower and the leaves giving them a more realistic look, even a few curves in them. Then I want to woodburn more detail into the flower and leaves. Maybe even a scene in the background. I think it might be cool to fill the center widdled out part of the flower with rock chips of some kind. I tend to close my eyes when I'm checking out a piece I'm working on. For it to be right for me, it needs to feel like what I am making without even looking at it. I find lots of spots I need to work more that way. Might make a cool clock but still not sure yet.

I know....I'm strange.

This is a clock I made from Cedar wood. The panner has a little bit of gold in his pan and there are gold nuggets for indicating the time.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to seeing your chopping block updates Chris. Woodburning is definately fun! I need to dig out my woodburner again. I did grab my wood carving tools for around 2 hours and started to clean out the wood around the outside of the flower. Gads, I forgot how brutal it can be on the hands till I was done. I better easy back into that one, it's been awhile! I should just use the Dremel but it feels like cheating.

I can't find my woodburner yet but I'm not giving up! I did find Dan's leather aprin that I use when woodcarving though. I drape it across my lap when I am working the piece that way I don't slip and gouge my leg.
