Hi all!

A looong time ago, we had some posts about smoky quartz crystals that I think were being found in Colorado. I searched the forums, but couldn't find my posts from back then.

Anyway, at that time, I was looking for some to make arrowheads out of, and someone (Denise maybe?) sent me a crystal and a plate to try. I never was able to make an arrow head from them, but now have an opportunity tr learn crystal carving and am looking for some nice clear dark crystals (not to dark tho) about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter and 2.5 to 3 inches long to learn on. Does anyone remember the discusion, or better yet, is the person who traded me back then still a member here, and do you have any crystals to sell, trade, etc.
I do remember seeing a picture of a GIANT crystal that had to weigh seeral tons and was some 7 or more feet long. Ring any bells anyone?

Yep that sure does ring a bell. Denise would be my better half (also ColoradoProspector.com webmaster) That thread you are looking for can be found in the "Prospectors/Rockhounding Discussions" section of the forums titled "345lb Smokey Quartz".
So the big smokey wasn't quiet that big but it's still a dang good size un'. and had a sister almost as big from the same pocket.

We would love to see some of your carvings sometime too. Denise has been doing a bit of carving these days, recently she finished up a rutilated quartz snow man with a smokey quartz top hat. He's now keeping cool in the CP treasure chest awaiting to be added to someones collection.

Right now what we have for nice clear smokeys are listed in the CP Miners Market under facet grade smokey quartz rough. There are 5 small lots available at the moment that you might like, but if none of those seem right, then I can try to get our friend (Quentin) to come off a few pounds next time I see him. His claim's produced some pretty nice world class ones over the years.

You have some nice pieces there, but there's not what I need for me to practice on. Maybe I need to do my "learnin" on glass rather than crystal. Don't think I could afford many lessons using the real stuff....

Thanks Astrobleme, that was one of the first sculptures I made.
The smokey quartz top hot was a challenge, but it turned out pretty nice I think. The top of the hat still has the natural face of the smokey.
