Hi,
I am a newbie. I am going to the Telluride area next month. Can anyone give me some info on where to go or not to go. I have do some 'minor' experience in prospecting, paning, slucing and such . I am not sure what type of transportation, other than my suv, I will have at my disposal. Short Hikes are not out of the question. I appreciate any help or directions you folks can provide.
Thanks

Hi Goldingoaturds and welcome to the CP forum.
The Telluride area is an amazing place, and yes it is a great place to look for gold.
It got its name for good reason....hehe
Here is a link to its history...
Telluride historyThe
ColoradoProspector Membership has researched ares that could be of some help to you.
Good luck and make yourself at home here in the forum and the website.
There are some very friendly helpful people here.
Most are just out digging and dredging right now though.

Hello Mrs.CP
Thanks some much for your response and direction. I will indeed follow up on the sources you have mentioned.
Often times when I start researching something, I go through info overload. In this state of self induced confusion, I ask way too many questions. I promise to keep my questions to a minimum, and do more listening than talking, or writing as the the case may be.
Thanks again, you have been most kind, and I really appreciate your help.

I work around the telluride area alot during the summer but ive never prospected around there. If I get a day off its because its dumping rain.
I know there was mining up valley and supposedly there's placer gold in the river along the highway, like around placerville and upstream towards the mines past telluride.
I'm not sure about gems in the area but I'm sure there's something.
It's a tight valley with alot of people crammed in but a decent place to hang out if you have money to spend. I did get to catch the naked bike race on main street last summer. That was interesting. I can understand the girls, but why would any dude want to long board naked in front of everyone, especially on a cool evening? Sometimes I ponder these things.

Oh, and I just read you're coming next month, so it will still be ski season, so you'll be limited on where you can go. There will still be plenty of snow and the water could be getting high by then. High water during that time of the year can be sketch with how fast it can rise so pay attention. That's the time most beaver dams breach and ice bergs can break loose and cause dams, which will eventually break. You don't want to be downstream if that happens. Losing your tools will be the least of your worries. I've had close calls and I almost lost my sluice box last spring.
It may still be pretty frozen still but just keep an eye out for things.
I think I'd start around placerville and work upstream from there. I don't know what's around for sure. Youll probably be restricted to the actual waterway at that time, so you'll have to dig in the water with all the snow, plus the ground will still be frozen anywhere outside the waterway.
Just my $.02....

I'm looking for people that prospect for gems in telluride.
