I know I'm on the lower end of the scale but I run a homebuilt 2" with a 3/4 hp 4cycle pump. It's 25cc and pumps ~30 gpm with 1" inlet and outlet but the best thing about it, is pump and motor weigh 11lbs. The 4 cycle engine is quiet, economical, and powerful. It makes terrific suction as long as you aren't too deep but most of the time I use it I rarely go over 3/4 throttle and usually run about 1/2 throttle. I know a lot of people will run 2 or 3 hp for a 2 inch but the little 3/4hp can pull a vortex of air down to the nozzle from a foot below the surface in still water. I think it has a lot to do with the venturi which took a few tries to get right but once I perfected my no-clog design I ran all last season without problems.
