happy070.gif Summer officially began yesterday.

Independence Day is right around the corner! smileyflag.gif
I sure love looking at all the different cool colors in the fireworks during the celebration dont you?
How is that made possible you may have asked yourself while looking up? Minerals make it happen!

QUOTE
Each color in a fireworks display is produced by a specific mineral compound: bright greens are made with barium; deep reds are a product of strontium; blues come from copper; and yellows require sodium

happy088.gif

Learn more on the colors, and how to make your own colors in lights experiments yourself at Geologyonline.museum.state.il.us. Its also a great Geology lesson for grades 5-6, but I think its great info for all ages!!! signs021.gif

So where ever you, when your looking up at fireworks this year, remember what makes it possible!

Best Fourth of July I ever had was back decades ago on McClellan Mtn., just up from Georgetown. We had beer, big BBQ, and watched fireworks from Denver, Golden, Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and then one from I think, Dillon or Silverthorne (to the west, unsure what town it was). It was so cool!

Colorado has had a very dry start to the summer this year! With all the fires going, many have canceled their firework shows. sad.gif

Several still have shows scheduled so I thought I would add a link to the list here.

I think most people here have had enough summertime events with the word "fire" in them.

Here is a list of firework shows for 2014.

From 7 news Denver - Fireworks in Colorado 2014

You will want to check this list later in your planning, as some of the shows may be canceled due to fire bans by the 4th.
