Which one of these rocks do you think holds beauty inside? biggrin.gif All were cut in half to show what's in them.

Bottom left.....

I was leaning that way too.... but I'll go with dead center, seeing something interesting in the upper left hand portion of that one.
Upper right has some nice exposed banding too.... hmmmm, I bet they are all pretty nice!

Middle center and middle right look to be agate nodules, top right and bottom middle look to be 2 halves of the same solid rock, top middle looks like the kind of rock that I hope there's something good in (but never does), top left looks promising - as does middle left - but both are a little small, so I went with bottom left, as it looks to be the larger half of middle left. Probably over thunk this. caveman.gif

I like hearing the reasons you would think there is good stuff inside! happy112.gif It's not always easy telling what's good and what's a sex stone. giggle.gif Good reasons you guys have given! What makes you say all the above NewRockHounder? You would pick up all these rocks to take home?

Alright here's my WAG at it,

All on the left display the typical shape of a geode. It is possible that the top one on the left is just a sandstone nodule, I'm probably wrong but I have seen some perfictly round stones here in Colorado that turn out to just be sandstone through and through. The first two on the right I would say are Agate, leaning towards Jasper. The one at the top center row I would hazzard to say is strictly Jasper. The one dead center in the picture really has my intrest peaked. It could be a type of Fire Agate and a real show stopper! There are two rocks in the bottom row that I would not expect to show much, that would be the center and right. That center one on the left does show a little teaser but there could be two different answers here.

One answer might be the pattern that the banded agate makes inside a solid core rock. The other answer might be a very gemmy pocket of Amethyst , or like crystals, inside a hollow geode.

Before I give my answers could you flip over that center stone and let me have a look at it please? lol

Ah what the heck, For best awsome pattern with a solid core.... The rock dead center in the picture! For a beautiful pocket of Gemmy Crystals..... The Geode on the bottom left! That one displays the typical bummpy/scalely crust that just screams, Crystals!

I did take a picture of them all flipped over in the same positions, but I'm going to hold off posting it in case others want to examine them and reply first.

The results may really surprise you though. groucho.gif

None of these are from Colorado though. They were given to us as is, I'm thinking most (if not all) are Brazilian agate nodules. No one picked my favorite (bottom right) , seems it was one of the last ones looked at. happy112.gif Guess that's because of the shape? Here is a picture of them turned over ( same positions) revealing what's inside. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif Picture is taken with stones wet since they are not polished out yet.

Amazing what hides inside some of those ugly ducklings.

Wow, those are all winners. I agree that lower right is the best looking, the shape resembles a human footprint.
Cool stuff Denise!!

They are pretty cool! It definitely looks like a foot print Chris! happy088.gif If you turn it slightly counter clock wise you will see the orientation of it when in the ground by it's bands. Only the three in the middle (left to right) have druzy centers, the rest are solid. The only ones that match (from the same rock) are the center and the one directly below it. happy112.gif I can tell there was a slab taken from it making the patters not match as much any more. Bet that one surprised a few of you. biggrin.gif

When I saw them piled in a wooden box, I thought right away there could be damage to the cut face making it difficult to polish out. kick_can.gif smiley-shocked003.gif The blue one on the bottom left has a big chip out of the face of it so it will probably be cut up to make other things like guitar picks, sculptures or cabochons. The center one also has a chip and a crack going straight up in the pic. Others seem ok for flat lapping though. signs021.gif
