I was pleased to view the recent GOLD RUSH show that detailed their interest in Colorado gold placers near the towns of Fairplay and South Park . I agree with Todd Hoffman's crew that they are in the best gold they've ever mined. Over the past many seasons of the show, I've wondered why they didn't just come to Colorado to fulfill their dreams. It was a pleasant surprise to see my family's mining interests in full view from the camera shots from Pennsylvania Mountain where the large nuggets were recovered during their testing.

My family has been working mining claims in the London Mountain and Pennsylvania Mountain area producing precious and base metals for longer than I can clearly remember. One thing we always value very highly is gold bearing fossil remains such as the 16 TON GOLDEN GENEVIEVE DINOSAUR as noted in the attachment below.

The site high up Pennsylvania Mountain that Hoffman and Dodge tested may have remnant fossils occurring along with the LARGE GOLD NUGGETS they recovered. I wish them the best in finding placer gold and hope they can recover some gold bearing fossils, as those finds would be very interesting to the followers of this series.

Just out of curiosity, what claims on Pennsylvania Mt. are they working?

I've done some survey work in the past on the SW flank of London Mt. when Ben Wright was still alive. He was shocked at what I found there. After his death, I gave a talk at the Denver Mining Club on what I had found. They had a hard time "buying" what I had found too. W. Kennon Jewett was quite a character. His father was a railroad magnate back east. Young Kennon, decided he wanted to be a mining magnate and moved to Colorado. His fight on London Mt. with Delia Sinnott is one of the stranger survey stories I have ever run across.

I've been doing research on those areas and there are TONS of claims around there! Hard to know where I could poke in at but I imagine all the placer claims are along the waterways as usual. The lode claims could be wherever but they all intertwine together too, plus alot of private property there of course. I can only get so much online so ill have to stay along the outskirts of any quadrants I can confirm unless I go to the county office for claim maps after narrowing it down more.
I recently bought a nice laptop and it's awesome for research and the lr2000 but I soon found out it won't charge on my solar system inverter. It needs a pure sine wave inverter and mine is the basic modified sine wave. Everything else I have runs fine but I guess certain technology needs a certain charge wave and pure sine wave is exactly like grid tied power. Finicky high tech stuff and a headache to be a high tech redneck sometimes!
I'd like to go out in those mountains for a week but I don't even know where I'd start yet. There might be a place I can claim there somewhere!

johnny,

I've also done quite a bit of work locating the patented claims and several unpatented claims in the area. I attached an example of a large discrepancy between the positions shown on the 7-1/2 minute topo quad (jointly produced by the Dept. of Interior and Dept. of Agriculture) and reality. I have survey control nearby and also correlated the positions of the shafts, tunnels, adits, cuts, etc. listed in the patent survey field notes with the mining scars on the NAIP imagery (National Aerial Imaging Program).

Don't ever trust the positions shown on the topo quads. They can be hundreds of feet away from their true positions. Just ask a certain woman who thought some aqua claims were down in a bowl instead of along the ridge line because she trusted the topo maps. In another case I assisted a land owner who believed that a USFS trail head parking lot encroached on his mining claim. The FS was collecting parking fees from folks parking on my client's private property. The Master Title Plat showed the claim to be over 300 feet away.

These three claims are located on Loveland Mountain, northeast of the London Fault.

Yes I see that. The land I live on is half a section but the roads aren't marked correctly on the maps. Namely the natl geo waterproof tearproof type. I haven't noticed many discrepancies but some.
Most of the patented land I've run into have been pretty accurate and I notice because I try to avoid it. Plus they are fenced off sometimes and Its not the same as walking across a persons unpatented claim which is no big deal.
I can see that would probably be the hardest part of prospecting there. The trespassing part worries me although It can usually be worked out with some map work.
It's a little drive from Gunnison so I'd be sure to do my research before that trip. I like to have a good plan worked out and having a list is better for me. There's enough to think about with everything else and especially if the fever is kicking in. That's when dumb things happen hehe.
