Howdy y'all! Well met!

I'm a brand spanking new tenderfoot greenhorn Colorado Prospector. I just got signed up as a member and thought I would poke my head in and
introduce myself.

I was born and raised on the western slope where my mom introduced me to rock hounding and hunting for Indian artifacts. I can remember us finding tons of fossils and we even found a dinosaur vertebrae once. Indian beads (always stop and check ant hills), arrow heads and broken pottery seemed so common that we were practically trippin' over 'em.

When I was an early teenager, my dad went to work at Climax Molybdenum mine, so we relocated to Leadville, Colorado. Being a punk teenager, I couldn't care less about the the extremely rich, historic and beautiful country that I was in. All I wanted to do was chase girls and drink beer. I could really kick myself HARD when I think about all of the great prospecting opportunities that I passed up. Then again, if it hadn't been for chasing girls, I might not have met my wonderful wife whom I've been with for 26 years. When I turned 18 I went to work at Climax Molybdenum where I operated a hammer mill crusher. I probably would have made it a career if Climax hadn't shut down due to huge stock piles of Moly and no demand for it.

Joined the Air Force and was an F-16 Crew Chief for about 4 years. Got fed up with that so we came back to Colorado where we currently live in Longmont. I now design electronics and firmware for radiation detection monitors.

Anyway, I've always had rocks in my head. Some of them are awful heavy and I think they are lodged in there pretty darn good. It's Going to
take a lot more than a poop tube to get them out. Doing some serious prospecting should loosen them up a bit...

Going to Fairplay this weekend. Can't wait!!! Got a Desert Fox to let loose on the beach (and a few other choice locations). It's HUNGRY and
needs to be fed real bad! Went to Idaho Springs a few weekends ago and got skunked big time. By the way, if your a GPAA member, don't bother
going to Homack #1-3. It's some sort of a dude ranch and the gate is locked up with a "Special Occupancy Closure Order" from the Clear
Creek Ranger District posted on it. Took a sample from Barbour Fork but it was colorless. If you like to mountain bike, this is a great
area. I'm too dang fat and lazy for such nonsense!

Well I'm rattling off like Tom Massey so I guess it's time to clean up and shut down for awhile.

Looking forward to sharing (and maybe creating) a few experiences with y'all. Sorry about the long winded life story. I'll try to contribute
more useful material in the future.

Happy digin's,

Boogie

How you doing? There are some good places that you can go to and find good color! If your a GPAA member you can go to Arkansas and there are a few other clams in the book that have good potential, you can also try point bar(free). Hope that you find good color and have fun!!

Hi Boogie,

Welcome to the forums and the Colorado Prospector club. smileywaving.gif
We all look forward to your future participation. Sure sounds like you've had "rocks in the head" for sometime. biggrin.gif You'll fit in perfect around here as most of us all have the same affliction. happy088.gif Some rocks are a bit heavier than others but they are all colorful and unique in their own right. happy112.gif

Make yourself right at home browsing around and input when you'd like to. Don't forget the camera when you go out too, and good luck prospecting!

Hi Boogie - Welcome to the forum! I'm curious about your Homack trip. I was planning on going up there this Sunday to take a try at it - first trip to that claim. Did you actually make it to the claims or did you get stopped at the gate? It looks like there's a picnic area there and a camp Wilaha - is that the camp you got stopped at? The GPAA claim guide says "seasonal water" - anything flowing up there? Thanks - Rich

Hi Rich! Yeah, we made it to the claim and was stopped at the gate. It had this closure notice (see link below) posted on the gate and there was also a sign indicating that the dude ranch was closed. You might try giving the forest service a call (number is on the notice) and see what they have to say. It indeed used to be camp Wilaha. Homack #1 had a log type fence and had a sign posted that said "no camping here". No place to pull over so we continued up to Barbour fork and took a quick sample from the creek (more like a ditch). Lots of pretty, shiny mica but not even so much as a hint of the yellow stuff. The only water that I could see was the creek. Didn't feel comfortable doing much exploring on the claim because it looked off limits. Needless to say, it was a little disapointing. I'm a new GPAA member and didn't get any update to the claims.

I hope it's ok to post this here. I think this kind of information should be made available to the public.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/conditions/cl...-2007-02map.pdf

By the way, if you plan to picnic at Barbour Fork, you better bring your own table. It's mostly just a parking lot for a trail head.

Hope you have an alternative location because this one doesn't look very promising.

Good luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

YellowFever, Arkansas is our next destination after Fairplay. I'm especially looking forward to that one!

Thanks for having me CP! So far, I haven't found much gold in the wild, but this forum is really panning out.

Sounds like bad news on the Homack site, Boogie. Thanks for the info. I couldn't open the link, but will try to get the FS info later today from the fed site.

You're right, Rich. I thought it was just my Adobe reader but there appears to be a little problem with the PDF file. Here is how you can get the link to work : Click the link and Adobe will chew on the PDF file until it spits up an error message. Click "OK" on the error message and then refresh the page. The PDF file should then be displayed (after chewing on it a little bit more).

Here is a short clip of text from the notice that has the phone number on it.
"Information shown is based upon data compiled as of Jan 2006 .
For more information, contact: Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest Supervisors Office: 970 -295-6600."

You might need this information for reference if you call them :

Thanks for the info. I called the Clear Creek District Ranger office this afternoon and was told the road is closed due to elk calving season. Apparently done in conjunction with the DOW. The GPOC club has several claims on Beaver Creek out of Fairplay. I went there last May and found a locked gate with a sign advising the closure until 6/15 - I wonder if that was for the same reason at that area.

Hey Rich, the plot thickens...

Did a little more research on this and found the following document :

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Order No. 10-07-2007-02
ORDER
ENTRY RESTRICTIONS – CLEAR CREEK DUDE RANCH STRUCTURES
ARAPAHO & ROOSEVELT NATIONAL FORESTS
AND PAWNEE NATIONAL GRASSLAND

Pursuant to 36 CFR §261.50(a), the following acts are prohibited in that area occupied by the former
Clear Creek Dude Ranch, on National Forest System lands administered by the Arapaho National
Forest, Clear Creek County, Colorado (the “restricted area”). The Order shall be in effect immediately
upon approval.

The restricted area (14 acres) formerly known as Clear Creek Dude Ranch is located south of Interstate
70 on the Clear Creek Ranger District within Section 10, T.4S., R.73W., 6th P.M, and is depicted on
the attached map, hereby incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A.

PROHIBITIONS:

Going into or being upon the restricted area, and any structure or improvement associated with the
former Clear Creek Dude Ranch, including, but not limited to the lodge, cabins, workshop, garages,
and any other accessory structures (36 CFR § 261.53 (e) and (f)).

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
1. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting
force, when involved in the performance of an official duty.
2. Persons with a Forest Service permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act
or omission.

The purpose of this Order is to assure the protection of public safety, property, and natural resources
during sale of improvements or removal of improvements at the former Clear Creek Dude Ranch.
This Order will be in effect when signed and shall remain in effect year-round until either
improvements are sold and a new authorization is issued or the improvements are removed or
demolished and the site is reclaimed, or December 31, 2010 whichever event occurs first.
Done at Ft. Collins, Colorado, this 23rd day of April 2007.

I wonder if exception #2 applies to GPAA access to the claim?

The owners of the buildings better get moving! Those are some nice looking structures. The area looked well maintained. I didn't see any "for sale" signs. If I'm reading this right, if they don't sell or get the buildings moved by Dec 31st 2010, they become the property of the claim or get destroyed? Wow! Major bummer for the owners but wouldn't it make a great base camp for prospecting, complete with shop and everything? Dream on right? Interesting to see what happens next year.

Anyway if we are going to continue this discussion, we should probably find a GPAA forum. Sorry CP if this is getting too far out of scope.

Interesting - The guy I spoke with at the CC ranger office said you can park at the locked gate and walk in, but no vehicle traffic until 6/16. I thought about going there too late otherwise I would have called the GPAA office to see if they knew anything. I've never been to that area so not sure if CC dude ranch is the same as Camp Wilaha. The GPAA claims are 3 claims of 20 acres each @ 60 acres total. The CC ranch looks like 14 acres - maybe just access to the buildings if off limits? Not sure, but I may end up going to another place if it is too much of a problem with access. I may post a quick question on the GPAA site to see if anyone there is familiar with those claims.

The dude ranch is definately camp Wilaha. Good catch on the acres! I bet you're onto something.

Found another link about the claim. These guys didn't say anything that I disagree with... :
http://www.49ermike.com/co9.shtml

I'm probably going to steer clear of Homack. I get skunked easy enough without having to work at it. Not sure what GPAA sees in this place. From what I saw, you can't even camp there (Homack #1) anymore.

Good Luck in your adventures.

You are very welcome Boogie, we've got alot of input from many folks around the forum that will hopefully help find more of that wild stuff too.

Thanks for saying that Boogie, that shows alot on your part and yes we do get frustated as all get out when threads continually get other clubs names or their gatherings etc talked about while we are trying to discuss things here but it happens. I try to just keep the flows positive as possible without getting nasty about it because it does happen and it's not the end of the world. No worries. biggrin.gif
In this thread for instance, I now have a great opportunity to show everyone reading why the Colorado Prospector club is so different! signs021.gif

So as an example lets recap from this thread....another clubs claims ? Maybe, who's to say for sure? There are new buildings and a closed dude ranch on 14 acres. FS is the agency who closed it. and it may or may not be a temp closeure?
That's alot of questions for a "suppose to be able to access claim" isn't it? From what I've read here....this could have been or may still be a location claim where someone or club wanted to start a guided dude ranch?......possibly for prospecting? Hmmmmm who knows but that could explain why the FS has closed it if the guide and out fitters license and bonding was never finalized or?
The point is that is alot of questions and who the heck would you contact for an answer?

For a Colorado Prospector club member, these types of questions do not arise. Why you wonder.......because we are not telling you to go to any claim we are holding for your use. FOLKS THAT WOULD NOT BE A MINING ACTIVITY AND THEREFORE NOT A VALID REASON TO FILE OR HOLD A MINING CLAIM!
As CP club members you are the only club members any where who can re verify any iformation we supply you. Including open lands we've already researched and were open when we finished that research! There are NO OTHER CLUBS who will teach or present this information for you to learn or re verify and that is the crux of our conception in 2003. THE CLUB CONCEPT HAS NEVER CHANGED AND IT NEVER WILL!
To really be a bona fide prospector/miner you need to know the right information, be able to verify and use that information both in research at home and in the field.
Having the right information and train of thought will only equal success in your mining! emoticon-misc-004.gif signs026.gif smileyflag.gif

So, as a comparision, everyone can see the value of being able to reverify and have references to back them up can not only mean less questions in the field, but much better success rate to individual's prospecting and mining ventures with knowledge that is correct and usable.

Since we are discussing the club, I have to also mention for the guests reading, we have a club membership drive running right now as well.
For details on the membership drive or membership levels and benefits click over to the "Club Membership Drive 2010" thread.......Become a part of the Colorado Prospector club. We'd all be honored to have your participation and you'd part of an awesome community of prospectors/miners!
