I thought it would be fun to try and find the camouflaged critter in the photo.
I'll start off the thread with the picture only, and If no one finds it right away, I can come in and tell you what your looking for as a hint.

Ok, here is the picture. Can you find it?

Posted by: swizz Jul 14 2011, 06:40 AM

okay.. that was difficult, but I found it!
My eyes searched for segmentation first (thorax, abdomen area). Found that, then noticed the antennae, head, abdomen, and legs.
I won't give location so others can have fun finding it.... either Praying Mantis or Walking Stick? Guessing Mantis by head shape. Both have exceptional camo.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Jul 14 2011, 09:21 AM

happy088.gif Good eye Chris! It is an obscure ground mantid, and is very small (15-30 mm.) Timmy also has the good eye, as he was the one that found it. He brought it over to me on a little rock, and said "look a praying mantis, but its dead". It did appear dead, but I told him they sometimes play possum to keep from being eaten. groucho.gif I told him to just keep watching it while I went to go get my camera. All of a sudden I hear him say "Wow, it just twisted it's head and looked at me!" By the time I got back out there, it was standing up. I have never seen one this small, my dad had one when I was a kid but it was alot larger and green.

I placed it in the garden where it can find a new spot to be. biggrin.gif
I will add a closer better picture of it later.

I have to admit. It did not come right out and poke me in the eyes. This one took a while. After I seen it I was all set to go 180 degrees out from Swizz, "just to cover all bases", and say stick. I figured it was a juvenile. But Mantid you say? Hmmmm.... That’s cool, More of the gooey stuff I didn't know. Woody.

Posted by: russau Jul 14 2011, 03:43 PM

yep it took me awhile but i finnaly found it. thats what i assumed it was going tobe when you said it was camoed, and i know what they look like but i didnt see it untill i enlarged the picture. now it just pops out at me!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Jul 16 2011, 07:09 AM

Good eyes guys! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif The head is actually how Timmy knew it was a praying mantis.
Here is a picture of where it is located in the shot.

Here is a close up side view of it.

Posted by: russau Jul 17 2011, 05:23 AM

thats the first one ive seen thats is that color. the ones i see are green. that thing strained my ole eyeballs to find it! but heck, im old!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Aug 1 2011, 10:23 PM

Too funny Russ. It's the first time I have seen these also.......and small they are. I have no idea how Timmy saw it. wacko.gif

One really needs to keep their eyes open, as you never know what might be right in front of you.

Ok, we've tried several times to look for what's in your's Oklapony but we can not seem to find it.......we give! confused0082[1].gif
I've just not been able to pick up on anything scanning over the pic yet but I'm sure it would've bitten my nose several times by now. smiley-laughing021.gif

Don't know how many others have tried without finding anything yet but I sure hope it's not just my old eyes goin' south! smiley-shocked003.gif wacko.gif biggrin.gif

It's a super tough one, for sure. It's a 14" brown trout that I had just released and it was resting before swimming off to mend its bruised ego. Honestly if I hadn't looked 3 times for the correct framing when I snapped the pic I wouldn't be able find it either. Their camouflage is astoundingly good, especially in rocky bottom creeks, even with good polarized lenses. Basically, in the pic, it looks like a ghost thanks to the rippling effect of the running creek but you can make out the tail. I'll try to carve out some time in the next day or so to edit the photo and draw a loop around it and repost.

Okay, here 'tis...

Sorry OlkaPony,

My vision must be impaired because I still don't see it. I think I will visit the optometrist and tell him for my next prescription I will need a Seeing Eye Dog. lol

Took this shot yesterday while ice fishing on Lake Granby... looking toward Indian Peaks.

Can you see Abe Lincoln? (hint: he's taking a nap)

Posted by: kmontoya911 Feb 21 2012, 12:05 AM

Laying down, looking up, center of the mountain range? chin to the left?

Posted by: Mrs.CP Feb 22 2012, 08:09 AM

Great picture Swizz! happy088.gif I have to agree with Ken, thats the same spot I see him. I hope your fishing goes well!

Posted by: Woody Feb 22 2012, 08:52 AM

Morning Chris, Hows the fishing?

Here is my guess.

Woody,
You nailed it 100%. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Seeing that last pic helps me think cold thoughts on a hot summer day. happy088.gif
Here is one......Not too hard, but it was definately hiding.

Posted by: swizz Aug 9 2012, 06:19 PM

That was a kinda tuff one! I blew it up to full size and at first I thought it was a Moose nostril, LOL.
I got it now.... cute lil bugger!
I've been having frequent animal encounters lately.
I'm doing a cabin small job near RMNP and startled a full size sleeping bull Moose early yesterday morning... actually, he startled me, accidentally too close and I didn't even see him... so I've got Moose on the brain.
We're having an incredibly bad Bear season here this year because they are lacking berries bigtime. Can set your watch for 10:15 every night and they begin raiding. Big, small, medium... the whole gang. I have a dumpster at the end of the driveway. Heard one messing with it a week or so ago and I was pissed. It was a bright moon (almost full) so I could see well. Went out and the damn thing was as big as the dumpster. I fired off a couple rounds into the night sky with the .40 and he ski-daddled, but keeps coming back. Poor things are really hungry and I feel for em I don't care as much about the trash as do do my dog... she's tied up out there sometimes and is gettin old. Dumpster is locked but they are strong enough to tip it over while trying. I heard over a dozen random shots the other night from town so I know I aint the only one. Some people have been authorized to use .12 ga rubber slugs. I have an air horn now and will try that next. That drought has caused a chain reaction of problems in the animal kingdom.

Here is a couple good ones for ya that I found online.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Oct 13 2012, 06:59 AM

Great pics! I can see the lyzard in the first one and the really cool caterpillar in the second one. The blenders are definately working well!

Here is one I took the other day.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 10 2013, 09:59 AM

Was that last one too hard for everyone? confused0082[1].gif I thought it was king of easy myself!
Here is another with lots of tree cover.......Can you see it?

Cow Elk?

Posted by: swizz Sep 10 2013, 11:08 AM

Cow Elk. Had to enlarge to full size before I caught that one. Tricky. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
I like the Deer one prior also... not too hard, that one was easy.

Posted by: Caveman Sep 10 2013, 11:26 AM

Definitely cow elk. Great shot!

Posted by: russau Sep 10 2013, 01:03 PM

looking at all of these neat pictures kinda reminds me of me when the word "work" is spoken in my presence!:)

thumbsupsmileyanim.gif It is a Cow Elk. Good eyes! I spotted her while Dan was driving but he was the one who took the picture.

:)!

Posted by: ColoradoProspector Sep 16 2013, 08:14 AM

Thanks for the compliments guys, always love seeing elk and or deer after a hard day cuttin' trees. She was only a couple hundred yards down the road from our cutting spot, just slid the truck into neutral and shut it down (kinda loud ol' beast), then she decided she would stay but was very watchful of my picture takin' zings and whirs!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 22 2013, 10:59 AM

I think that was the same one giving me a fashion show when you were busy cutting the other day. Wonder where her boy friend has been hiding? unsure.gif biggrin.gif He's out there somewhere close!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 25 2013, 07:53 AM

Almost the exact same spot as the last picture, just the other side of the road. Can you see it? eating-popcorn-03.gif

Posted by: OklaPony Sep 25 2013, 08:07 AM

Oh, deer.

Posted by: Caveman Sep 25 2013, 12:01 PM

Nice rack on him.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 25 2013, 08:23 PM

It is a nice buck! The buck that was to the left of him was twice the size with an award winning rack though. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif He was beautiful!!! By the time I grabbed the camera, the smaller guy was the only one left in the shot.......at least as far as I can tell looking at the picture. unsure.gif confused0082[1].gif CP also got a good look at him before he took off into the brush.

Posted by: Caveman Sep 25 2013, 09:12 PM

That's why the really nice ones are called "Ghosts". You done got "Ghosted"! smiley-shocked003.gif and it's not even Halloween yet...... candle_smiley.gif

smiley-laughing021.gif Caveman! Not the first time this week though even. Had a huge owl swoop down at me at 3 in the morning from the cat tree then disappeared. smiley-shocked003.gif Scared the wits out of me! laugh.gif Was huge! Now that thing can eat a bunny...no problem!

Here is a smaller area for a "can you see it?".................Well! Can you see it? biggrin.gif

Got lots of those "toads" here! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 27 2013, 06:30 AM

Good eye! Here is a pic with the weed pulled away so you can see it. These guys are pretty tiny but as you can see by it's belly, it has been eating lots of ants.

Posted by: Caveman Sep 27 2013, 10:03 AM

Picked one up a few days ago - little guy wrapped around my finger and hung on for a while..... must have liked the warmth on a cool morning!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Sep 29 2013, 08:45 AM

Awww cute! happy.gif Some cool mornings lately too that's for sure!

Posted by: swizz Oct 2 2013, 06:57 PM

Ok, this is an easy one!
Someone had all four legs sprawled out and was taking a nap near the top of a tree... totally crashed out, didn't even know I was down there below. sleep.gif giggle.gif
This is as close as I could zoom with the phone camera, not too hard to figure out who this guy is.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Oct 3 2013, 06:39 AM

Great picture Chris! I have never seen a porky sleeping in a tree before, thanks. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Posted by: swizz Oct 3 2013, 07:00 AM

Me neither! He actually looked really comfortable.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Oct 4 2013, 06:59 AM

Finally spotted that bull with his ladies. happy112.gif He didn't like us being there though! He had a huge neck!!!

Posted by: swizz Oct 4 2013, 07:35 AM

What an awesome pic Denise!!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Oct 5 2013, 08:36 AM

Thanks Chris! There were several more ladies but they had already started to leave to the left when I took the picture.

I'm still thrown by your porcupine sleeping in the tree pic.
Now that's talent!!
laugh.gif

Posted by: Caveman Oct 7 2013, 09:28 PM

What Chris said! Man, that guy's big. arms.gif Chris, great pic of the porcy!

Here is a little bit of a different one.....Can you see it?

Posted by: swizz Dec 11 2013, 12:19 PM

YES! Not the rabbit though..... I had to enlarge your pic to find it.
That was a really good one. happy088.gif

Posted by: Caveman Dec 11 2013, 01:10 PM

Very cool! Both of them match the background really well.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Dec 12 2013, 08:00 AM

Good eyes guys! happy112.gif What you can't see so well though is the birds head in the birds mouth.... smiley-shocked003.gif

Here is a closer look at what it was doing before it landed on that branch.....

That bird sat there eating it for over 5 hours till the sun went down. Crack of dawn it was at it again for another 4 hours till it was gone.

Posted by: Caveman Dec 13 2013, 01:03 PM

Very cool! I didn't realize that it was a shrike. I haven't seen one of those in a very long time.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Dec 16 2013, 07:17 AM

happy088.gif Good one Caveman, AKA the Butcher Bird! This was a kill of it's own, not a find. Seems they will eat birds in the winter since there are no toads, insects and the rodents are harder to get under the snow. Very cool birds indeed, we have a pair that has come around for a bit now. They love to come to the gate and call for the cat to come out and play. giggle.gif Drives her nuts but keeps her occupied. laugh.gif

Posted by: Caveman Dec 16 2013, 01:02 PM

Yes - The butcher bird. One of the few small birds that can actually do serious damage to a cat - if they feel threatened in some way!
Normally, though, they "play" with a cat. The game seems to be "How crazy came we make this furry critter before it gives up and goes away?" They are definitely better
at it than mocking birds!

Posted by: swizz Dec 24 2013, 10:33 AM

Can you spot the hidden structure in this pic.
It's not the snowed-in Trappers cabin on the right nor the logs in the foreground on the right.

Posted by: traddoerr Dec 24 2013, 01:45 PM

I see what looks like a tipi?

Posted by: swizz Dec 24 2013, 05:52 PM

You got it!
It blends into the landscape really well, summer or winter. Has a fire pit in the center and an elevated wood floor. Comfy seating inside too. It was built by a professional teepee guy but I can't remember his name.

Posted by: traddoerr Dec 25 2013, 02:08 PM

this one was really hard, it took a long hard look before the outline revealed itself. Tipi's are some of the coolest tents, and this one sounds like it would be great for a extended stay if one wanted. The snow up there looks great, but sure grinds on the Ol cabin fever, Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Posted by: swizz Dec 26 2013, 04:52 PM

Here's a pic of it with the sun shining after the snow and zoomed out a little to show Cascade Mtn in the background.

Posted by: Mrs.CP Dec 29 2013, 08:53 AM

happy112.gif Very hidden in the snow, great pictures!! I would have never seen it, good eye traddoerr!!

How many paws can you see in this picture? giggle.gif chin.gif

Posted by: swizz Mar 28 2015, 08:40 AM

5! smiley-laughing021.gif

Posted by: Mrs.CP Mar 30 2015, 07:26 AM

Ahhhh but.........Are you also counting the sasquatch heel? unsure.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: fenixsmom Mar 30 2015, 10:59 PM

Ninja foot!

Posted by: Mrs.CP Mar 31 2015, 07:33 AM

Cat sure is a Ninja! She is always trying to get a quick sniff of the puppy every chance she can get....when it's sleeping! laugh.gif

Here is a picture Dan took of the puppy...with an added something.

Pay backs can be hell though..... giggle.gif When the cat took my seat, I came up behind her and started to pet her. Without her noticing, I let Terra sneak in and start sniffing and nibbling her tail. Dan had a look like this on his face. smiley-shocked003.gif Went well and the cat was none the wiser.

Fair is fair right?
happy112.gif

Posted by: Caveman Mar 31 2015, 09:42 AM

What I did notice is that the 'Squatch heel is almost as big as the puppy's head! smiley-shocked003.gif

smiley-laughing021.gif Yes it is Scott but not anymore. She is growing so fast. wub.gif

Posted by: Mrs.CP Jun 16 2015, 04:03 PM

Good eyes! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif This little one insisted on watching me chop wood through the chopped pile. happy.gif I was really careful with the wood tossing after I noticed it. Was so small it could fit in the palm of my hand. Here is a close look with ears included. wub.gif

Posted by: CP Jul 27 2015, 05:04 PM

I think I can see it too...... a squirrel?

Posted by: Caveman Jul 27 2015, 06:18 PM

Posted by: fenixsmom Jul 28 2015, 06:16 AM

Good job guys! First one I've seen in our tree. Dog's are slacking. Wish I had a full close up. He was cute though. Kept looking at me anxiously when I would snap a photo.

In June of 2007 I took my Daughter, Father, and Stepmother on the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad. For some reason the train stopped above treeline for a few minutes. It was a fairly full train. Everyone is taking pictures of rocks and stuff when my daughter asks me what that animal was. I swear it took me a full minute before I spotted it. It was ~100 feet uphill. No one else on the train had spotted it and then everyone started looking for it. I zoomed in to get this shot.

Nope. ph34r.gif
There is a broadside view (almost full broadside, can't see it's nose) of the Bunny somewhere there though. It would be too large to fit where you suggested.

Nope.... I'll give us another day or two then point it out for everyone if nobody can spot it.

Posted by: aggum1983 Oct 1 2015, 02:52 PM

is it the 2 chipmunks?

Posted by: Rockyrat Oct 1 2015, 03:26 PM

Yes there are two. Actually there was 4 of them, but two of them got camera shy when I raised it to take the shot. This was taken at the Labor Day event. Every morning I would go check the water level in the dam, and the Chipmunks would come out to the road and say "hi". I could walk right up to them if I went slowly.

Posted by: swizz Oct 1 2015, 07:34 PM

I can see it, nice one! Cut throat? Good sized if it is.

giggle.gif Yep Timber must not have seen it. Cool pic, looks like it was probably a great fishing day then too! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Good eye. wink.gif
Not a Cutty, that one is a Rainbow at about 20", a tank.

Here is a cool one I took while Colin and Glenda were here. signs021.gif Not too hard but can you see it?

No one can see it, or you just don't want to say? unsure.gif

So, where in South Park was the photo taken?

Gneiss bird! biggrin.gif

Thanks Gene! The pic was taken in the San Luis Valley though. happy112.gif

Hmmm, then there's a mountain in the Sangre de Cristos whose outline is almost identical to Pikes Peak.

Well, since no attempts thus far, I will give it away. Not possible to make out the species from this pic, but zoom in and there are in fact 6 birds of prey. 5 American Bald Eagles with a Redtail Hawk in pursuit of one eagle.

Was definitely hard to see without looking at the larger image! Colorado sure has some amazing wildlife moments!! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif Thanks for sharing that one with us James!!

Always impressive to see one, let alone many.

That was fun. What a great idea.. I took this pic when I was travelling in Yellowstone with the wife. I snapped it doing 35mph on the road that crosses between north & south Yellowstone.

My little yellowstone buddy I coax out of his hole by making rattle snake sounds. Looked a little irritated with me.. ha ha.

Excellent snake shots. I'm going to bet that the hole he's protecting... is a giant vug filled with incredible gem plates! smiley-laughing021.gif

Was riding bike with my mom and found this, was able to get a pic of it.

Some great shots! The snakes really creep me out, especially the rattlers! smiley-shocked003.gif wacko.gif

I see it Tim right above your shadow, but can only see it's tail end. They blend well! This area is full of Mojave Greens.
unsure.gif One has to keep an eye out at all times. Good eye and pic Tim!
