Back in 1989 on March the 23rd, a large asteroid named 4581 Asclepius nearly hit planet Earth. It wasn't even detected until March 31st, 1989, several days after its closest approach.

Cool thread Astrobleme, thanks for posting it up! I noticed we had another "zinger" a few nights ago...... 9 meters wide at only 0.3 LD! WHEW close call and they just discovered it this year of course because of it's smaller size. Smaller threat on global scales but still would get some attention when it hit if it would have. What a show that would be locally!
