I'll be going camping again near Devil's Head this weekend, leaving Friday after work as usual.

Anyone's welcome to join me, help me finish this damn pocket I've been working on for a month.

I'll be camping, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and may stay majority of Monday since I asked for it off.

I'm sure as always, no takers, but figured I'd throw it out there again.. here's hope'n.

Sorry I haven't made it up there with ya yet. Finally made it back to the claim for Labor Day weekend to do some actual mining. We are hitting some nice Goethite crystals, including some weird pseudomorphs(goethite replacing some type of crystals) that I have yet to identify. If I do go up this weekend I will likely be after more goethite. I still want to do some diggin with you up there in Rampart. The weekend after this one I will be going to the Denver Gem and Mineral Show. Hopefully we can get together to do some diggin after that.

I hope your having a great time and finding lots of ground goodies NewRockHounder! Looks like the weather should be good through the weekend. happy088.gif Sounds like your hitting some nice pockets Mike! I love Colorado's Goethite, the best in the world I think. Most Goethite just look like globs, even after cleaned in other locations. Very cool on finding some pseudomorphs. Here is a picture of a pseudomorph of Hematite after Siderite on Albite (all cleaned up) found in Teller county. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Good luck on your digs guys and stay safe out there!

I hope you hit the big one buddy. Usually a pocket that size has a prize somewhere in it. I went for a day trip on Saturday and found some nice Goethite and Fluorite. When I get them scrubbed up and purdy then I get some video and pics. Pics alone won't do these Goethite structures justice. Time to show the Colorado Goethite and Colorado Fluorite pages some love.

Nice pic Mrs.CP. A very nice specimen. The strange structures with my Goethite look like stacks of coins or gambling chips and they have a slightly hexagonal structure like a Beryl crystal. They form in small spikey looking "acorns" with a stem. ??? I'm perplexed. I have scoured hundreds of photo of Goethite pseudomorphs and nothing looks close. I'll get some video as soon as I can. Maybe it's something really rare.

Found out today that my mystery crystals are most likely Hematite formations which still makes some of them interesting combos. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I think I stopped at that spot on Thursday, its just off the road to the right. looked around then headed on down the road to walk a spot near Devil's head south. There's supposed to be a place called Long Hollow id like to see. Talk about a PACK , I expected to see a kitchen sink in there!

You definitely looked ready for the weekend but I don't see your campfire? Gets pretty cool at night in the mountains, I hope you stayed warm! Did you finish cleaning out that pocket NewRockHounder? Would love to see more pics even if they are dirty still. laugh.gif

Would love to see pictures of your finds also Mike, you have me really interested in seeing those combos!!

I won't have a chance to get photos today maybe Sunday. I'm on a recon mission to find out more about our material. I have been told some of our Fluorite is really rare and that it is rare to find Goethite in our area. Was able to see some fluorites that we found with a pro cleaning and trimming job displayed at one of the shows, and they are actually selling at a price I never expected. greensmilies-012.gif

The fire pit is over to the right, in either pics of my campsite. I used a section of the hole that I'm not digging in.

And no.... STILL HAVEN'T FINISHED!!!! AHHHHHHH!! Right when I thought it was drying up, I hit another smaller pocket within the same area.... though I was spent from digging all weekend, so I filled it in until next time. Hopefully that other fella that found my spot didn't dig there.. but if he did, grats on my hard work. Or anyone else for that matter. I know it's fair game, but I've been enjoying digging it for the past two months. And making a camping spot there. I'll be going back either this next weekend or wait till my friend from California comes out at the end of the month, for the last camping trip of the season. We may hit that spot for a day or two if no one has finished it. I've also been scouting some new areas around Topaz Point. So we'll have options, regardless.

Nope I would never dig in a spot that I know someone is working.
