I'm going to go visit my dad and step-mother out in Missouri this March. They live on 6 acres out in the middle of nowhere and their house was built over 100 years ago. So, as they are planning on moving this year, I would like to do some metal detecting around their property.

I've done some research on detectors and it seems like there's some that are better at detecting precious metals as opposed to coins and whatnot. I also see that some of the more expensive units will have the ability to estimate what the object is metal is made of. This area was heavily used during the civil war so who knows what's out there.

I've considered buying a detector, but I would really like to try one out before I spend hundreds of $$ on something that I may or may not enjoy.

As I have never used one before, I'm hoping that someone on the forums has one (and maybe a pin pointer too) that they would be willing to rent to me for a week. I would also like to get some training for my daughter and myself. I have some old coins and utensils that I think would make perfect test targets so that we could better understand what we may be finding while out on the hunt.

I know that people may not want to trust a stranger with their gear, so if you would like a deposit or references I'm totally OK with that.

You're welcome to use mine, but it isn't anything high end. Found about $1.62 in coins, 24 bottle caps, and a few rusty nails with it! lol

By no means did I mean to imply that I was only going to want to use a "high-end" detector. I'd be happy to take you up on your offer. Let me know what you have in mind.

Hopefully we can hook up in the field somewhere between now & then, if not, just let me know before you leave so I can get it to you!
