Reviving my ventures on gold camp road. My wife and I were going to go camping last weekend, but the rain kept us home. Instead we drove out old stagecoach road and bushwacked our way up mount big chief. On our hike, we stumbled upon some old dig holes and found several beautiful little smokies! We didn't take any tools so the surface finds we're all we had.

Some of the peg.

The smokies.

I decided I should do some more exploring closer to home on gold camp, so Tuesday after work I set out on another adventure. My goal was an area with 3 old (and unclaimed as of 7/31/17) areas known to produce flourite. I hiked out an hour until I couldn't take it any more. Quartz was everywhere.

I finally decided I needed to dig and started trying to locate the pegmatite that must be just below the surface. I dug a bit and located a vein of what I believe is the pegmatite. So rather soft pieces of what I thought was feldspar. Shiny faces that showed when I broke pieces away. I dug down beside the peg and then pried off chunks of the vein.

I went out again on Monday to the same spot I dug the previous week. No pockets, but continued to find a lot of good signs. Lots of decomposing microcline close to the surface and more smoky faces than you could shake a stick at. Found 2 different openings that had muliple faces, but no terminations.

Some fresh, never before seen faces with sort of a termination on the middle crystal.

Large chunk of the microcline? Lots of this stuff. Think one face was about 6 inches long.

The vein. That's a 4" by 3" cracked smoky face in the center with a large face of the microcline just to the right. 2/3 of the smoky cracked off with a big chunk I pulled previous to this picture.
