The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining

Visit some of the highest peaks in the spectacular Colorado Rocky Mountains. Discover hiking and biking trails that will take you to the highest point on the North American continent. Learn how several generations spent their lives searching for the untold wealth that lies beneath these peaks. Take a trip back into time with this book and DVD bundle. This just published book is for the geologist, the historian, the sportsperson and the miner at heart!

The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining is a book which connects three generations together and tells the story of a man’s “love affair with mining” and the development of one small mine in the central Colorado Rocky Mountains. The Orphan Boy Mine started in the 1880’s when the state of Colorado was young. The author’s father, Herbert T. Young, reopened the mine after World War II.

Mining brought a large group of Colorado's first pioneers who settled and developed the state. Fortunes were made and lost. Wealth was created and a very unique history developed.

This book includes:

Stories and anecdotes of a miner's diverse and interesting life
History, geology and mining process of other mines in the Montezuma Mining District Photographs, maps, reports and historical mining documents on CD-ROM
Four-wheeling, ATV, hiking and bicycling trails in the area

Going for the Gold, The Story of the Phoenix Mine in Colorado DVD is a 40 minute DVD, shown on PBS in Colorado. You will discover how mining was actually done by the thousands of men and women who settled and developed Colorado. Learn about drilling, from the double jacking techniques of the 1880s to the modern, air driven jackleg drills. See how blasting and mucking was, and still is done in a small mining operation. Narrated by the Phoenix Mine’s owner, Al Mosch, this DVD presents stories about his family that caught gold fever, starting with his grandfather in the 1870s. Al tells about lives being changed by his “lucky bucket” and how three members of his family almost lost their lives in the quest for gold. Going for the Gold, The Story of the Phoenix Mine in Colorado is a fascinating, entertaining and educational DVD. Small mines and prospect holes dot nearly every peak in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, as well as many other areas in the western United States. The mining techniques and processes used by these miners are similar to those in use today at the Phoenix. This DVD gives you the opportunity to hear, see and experience mining history.

This book is ideal for anyone interested in mining, history, or geology. I am offering The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining plus the Going for the Gold DVD for $24.95 to members of this list. This is a savings of 20% off the retail price and I will pay the shipping in Colorado.
