Well, here I go again allowing my total ignorance of your beautiful state to rear it's head...
I've been sitting here for the past couple weeks picturing myself up there in Colorado, panning by day and enjoying nice cool nights, camped out by a mountain stream and getting a good night's sleep and starting all over the following day. Now. I'm starting to read about mosquitoes. MOUNTAIN mosquitos, at that! Those have to be some bad dudes, I'm thinking. I'm no stranger to mosquitoes down here in south Texas, where, due to our mild "winters", we pretty much deal with them year 'round. And I know how they can totally ruin any outdoor excursion. SO disappointed to make this new discovery! Am I wrong about the "cool" nights, too? Please, pardon my ignorance! I'm just trying to make sure I know what I'm potentially getting into... Btw... if any of you folks ever head down here to the coast (I live about 6 miles from Port Aransas), I'd be happy to offer advice on lodging, restaurants, fishing spots, etc... I can even meet up with you and exchange geographic knowledge! And anyone wanting to email me or discuss things on the phone, just let me know how to give that information privately and I'd be happy to do it. I may have unknowingly already made that info available...? |

Hello ChuckD!
I wouldn't worry too much about the skeeters. They aren't too terrible here and can easily be deterred using a repellent that contains a low percentage of DEET. Regarding cool nights: Depending on the elevation and time of year that you are camping, I'd say 'yes' the evenings can be cool or even cold. That is something that we've all grown to appreciate. It's a welcome reprieve from hot days digging. Makes for great campfires and cozy nights in a good sleeping bag. -------------------- /l ,[____], l---L-OlllllllO- ()_) ()_)--o-)_) BLACK SANDS MATTER! The snipes and jackelopes are very active during the summer but they just give bad wedgies and Indian wrist burns.

Lol But no fire ants and I don't think we have chiggers lol I know ticks can sometimes be pretty bad, but they don't bother me near as much as bunch of mosquitoes buzzing in me ear all night when I'm trying to sleep. I'm glad to hear that there's no fire ants. I think that the reason y'all don't have any is because WE got your share as well as ours, down here in Texas. |

I got to go "snipe" hunting along with several of my cousins while on a family camping trip, many years ago. A couple of my cousins actually went TWO nights in a row! We STILL give them a hard time about that to this day!!! |

JB300 & Swizz
thanks for the advice on the bugs and the weather. Down here in the summer, there is NO WHERE to escape the heat unless you have an A/C. I'll be sure to heed any advice you guys have to offer. |

yea, mosquitoes arent too terrible. we are having a bit of moisture though and starting may that way means a few more than usual.....unless it actually gets cold enough for this coming front to drop the white stuff. Just always be prepared when it comes to the rockies.....or as the saying goes, "Adventure starts when things go wrong."
not my best advice though. -------------------- Rock: Climb it. Dig it. Build your house upon it.

It was 97 degrees at my house yesterday, in the shade. |
