Hello,
Has anyone out there used the Gold Hog mats in their sluices and if so, do you have an opinion on their effectiveness? Thanks - Ken |

Hi Ken and welcome to CP.
Very effective. Expensive but I think it's worth it. I've been using Gold Hog Razorback matting in a reconfigured A-52 and am very happy with it. Run it fast and don't be shy with the material, great matting and Doc provides the best customer support with his vids. -------------------- /l ,[____], l---L-OlllllllO- ()_) ()_)--o-)_) BLACK SANDS MATTER! i also bought 4 variations of the Gold Hog matting but havent had a chance to get it wet yet! i bought it just to try it out in a newly made 2 inch dredge.this dredge has 2 different sluices. one is a flared sluice and the other is a crashbox with a suction nozzel. im intending to compair my sluices with different matting. obviously the Gold Hog, Vortex, and some Veranda carpetting, and lastly some plain ole black ribbed rubber matting.ill either try it out in Wyoming or in Colorado this summer. and if their any fires out there this year ill just stay home and try it out in the Missouri/Mississippi Rivers.

I am planning on stripping down an A52 and putting in Hog Matting. Thinking of going with mostly Razorback but there has been a lot of talk about putting in a couple of the Scrubber matts. I'm thinking making the first one a scrubber, the next 5 Razorback, then the last two Scrubbers. My thinking is that the Scrubbers work really great with fast water which should be faster at the tail of your box. One up front to get that lift and subsequent vortex behind the slope. I would like to hear opinions on this.
Another thing I am questioning is to use thin groove matting or not in the flair. Opinions? Then there is this mat clip I keep seeing at the head of the box in between the flair and the box to pressure hold down the hog matting. Can anyone point me in a good direction to be able to find one of these? Thanks- Ken |

Thanks- Ken Ken, sounds like you have a good plan in place, thats one of fun things about being able to finess/experiment with eguipment. I personally would leave the flare as a slick plate, I've found that this area is neccessary for seperating/stratifying your fed material, giving the heavy's time to seperate before hitting the riffles or matting. for my set up I have it layered, a full length v-mat on bottom then miners moss then exp-metal then my big riffle bars to lock in and hold it all down, has done great for catching even the really little stuff, 100-. |

Ken, on my 2 inch sluice i just made one out of ABS plastic for the holddown. i cut a rabbit on both sides and countersunk the S.S. screws to help cut down on the disturbance of the wtaer/material.

I've moded stage 3 in my 4" with razor Back and was impressed with very little blonde sand there and the black sand where it was suppose to be. My keene sluice (power sluice) has scrubr/RB/srcbr/and the rest RB. I don't get correct water due to 3'+ head on 2000gph pump at river but at home with recir system much better either way it catchs really small stuff. Look at Swizz remode to increase water flo, its very good. Bad cuts on your mat or scrap can be glued back together with alittle patience. Too $ to waste.

Thanks everyone for the replies ... great tips! Water flow is definitely something Im concerned about.... the vids on Gold Hog's website show most those mats performing at some pretty high water flows and Doc advises to go as fast and as steep as you can then back off. Ive read Swizz's post on his modification and it really gave me a lot to think about.... time to get to some tinkering....

After listening to Swizz's concerns on my Keene sluice God Hog mats being setup for running at his claim and reading all I can find on the GH forums and watching videos, I am changing my matting today.
Will have 2 strips of the "Little Hog (UR) under the crash box; removing the punch plate. Then I am going to try an uncut piece of the new River Hog dredge mat, to act as a nugget trap. Not sure how it will work with the amount of flow I have, so it may have to be trimmed later. After that I'll do a "cut trim" River Hog, to create a strong vortex. Then a piece of Talon Then I'm going to pull a piece or Razorback off my old setup Then a "throw trim" cut River Hog. ANd at the end another Talon. Putting it together today so I can give it a go next weekend. -------------------- Find Colorado Prospector on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/170314493176558

If the uncut River Hog up top doesn't work, I'll assess the flow and see which of the trimming options would work best; likely a tall throw, to move along the lighter stuff. Then it would have a good exchange on the next piece with a tall cut, and then settle down again.
Excited to give it a go next weekend. Hoping to get it set up to trap any bigger "corn flake" type pieces like Emac got last time we were out. Currently concerned they'd just blow through my current setup. I have been long tomming with my Angus on the end of the Keene, just in case. -------------------- Find Colorado Prospector on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/170314493176558

Will you have it put together for this weekend, or next? I'm excited to see how it does.
