So I bought my husband a fly tying vice and tools for Xmas. I was wondering if there is a preferred supply store that anyone uses. Also, is there like a massive book of fly patterns? Thanks all!

Posted by: fenixsmom Dec 30 2014, 12:39 PM

My first fly. It is supposed to be a "Fur Ant".

Hey, that's pretty good! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
I've been using Charlie's Fly Box for years for materials. You won't find a better materials and information source. happy088.gif
Regarding reference books for patterns... again Charlie's Fly Box. Go to his site and click on the 'Fly Box' link. All of his patterns and more are alphabetically archived with step by step pictorial instructions complete with materials lists and brief history of the pattern. I can recommend tying books but they are pricey and there's really no need when he provides this free service. It's outstanding in every way for the tyer. On his homepage there is a pic labeled "Monster Cutt". That's actually one of my pics (and fish) from the White River. That pic made a magazine cover. Charlie and his staff always give hands-on help in the shop when they can too! He has very good nationwide rep.

Thank you! I see a few mistakes to correct next time.

Charlie's Fly Box isn't too far from the house. I'll definitely check them out. Thanks for the advice on the books! A very valuable recommendation!
I bought a beginners material kit along with the vice and tools. It's refreshing to see the kit actually pay for itself with plenty of material to spare.

Thank you Chris!

Steve's been pretty busy lately tying flies. He devised some ice fishing flies. Charlie wasn't in the shop yesterday or I would have told him hi for ya Chris.

Posted by: fenixsmom Jan 21 2015, 02:14 PM

Here's what it looks like after trimming the legs, not as creepy.
The pattern is called Pat's Rubber Leg / aka: The Pickle. I tie these weighted so they ride deep in the current and simulate a large Stonefly Nymph that is haplessly tumbling downstream. The legs really come alive in the water, they're actually Spandex. The pattern and recipe/tutorial is on Charlie's site. It's an easy and fun tie!

Lol. Being as how im a reformed forum perv, I can see why you wouldn't take that for it's face value. I do enjoy pickled cucumbers. Particularly bread and butter. Yum!

Small flies, big fish. I tied these size #16 Chironomid Larva patterns and have been doing really well with them this spring!

Thank you 720! Hubby is tying small birds to attract the pike. His mind has always been a bit strange, but I suppose that's the pot calling the kettle black :)

hahaha, I do ty a black bird for pike. after seeing a 50+ inch pike take a shot at one. the duckling because of watching pike eat them as they were swimming with the family. poppers, birds, and ducks are best fished in the spring

Getting to be that time of year. I've been tying up my springtime favorites for early season in North Park.

Tungsten Head Chironomids. My favorite fly for high lakes.
