Si (Bill) found these very cool pictures of the lights from the meteor from a parking lot cam when it was coming in for a landing.

Todays report was that the meteorite hunters think that the fall might have happened 30 miles south of Olympia Washington. No finds yet.

To go along with the latest article here, there is an unvalidated report of a rock hitting Snohomish.

Space rocks have been actively falling recently,, Colorado, Washington, New Zealand, Portugal,, The New Zealand one has been recovered. It was made easier as it crashed through a fellows house. But he will be happy as he discovers the value of the rock far surpassed the damage to house.

This is a way cool pic of a foot long iron meteorite slice that has been acid etched to show the cross hatch crystal pattern called the widmanstatten pattern. These are created by two minerals that grow together , called taenite and kamacite, which have slightly different nickel amounts and thus etch at different rates slightly. The ultra cool thing tho is that you can see a size distribution difference between the mineral size ranging from small to the left, to large to the right. This is thought to have happened due to heat alteration on one side as the iron passed too close to the sun. Moreover it couldnt have been tumbling. This iron was recovered in Morocco, the original piece weighed 118 kilograms, and is classified as an iron octahedrite, medium III AB.

Boy Si, I tell ya! When I look at that meteorite slab after the acid etching, I swear that would suit a sci-fi story.
A "rock" in space...with futuristic electronics...sent as a probe...hmmm.... -------------------- Today's socio-political climate is rock solid proof that Adam and Eve weren't prospectors.
If they were they'd have eaten the snake instead of the apple and we'd still be in heaven.... |

I hope this link works. It is a news story about a meteorite exploding overhead in Wisconsin last evening. Hunters are heading that way now.

The link works great Si. Thanks!
If I was one of those loggers, I would take me a walk for myself, and I wouldnt stop till I found the source of the glow and explosion.... -------------------- Education is the key to the future,
