Quick update. I finished the folding knife pictured previously. It turned out nice but I haven't had time to set up the studio stuff and do a photo session. I'll update with those pics as soon as I can.
Meanwhile here's a sneak peek at what's currently on the bench. This one is from scratch, so a lot of hours to get to this point. Started with a bar of annealed CPM-154CM Stainless (pictured in background) which is a premium knife steel. "Annealed" basically means that it hasn't been hardened/heat treated yet. I designed and cut the profile with an angle grinder and shaped from there using bastard mill hand files and various other hand tools. I did the fancy embellishment on the spine using jeweler files. I don't own a heat treat oven yet so I'll be sending this one to Texas to be professionally heat treated soon. They do a great job (texasknifemakers) and don't charge an arm and a leg. Once I get it back I plan to make custom bolsters from a bar stock of 1/4" thick brass that I bought, then pick handle material... still undecided on that but leaning toward a synthetic or stabilized wood.

THANKS!
I just got her back from heat-treat. No warps or cracks! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
It doesn't look too different here... has a dull finish (scaling) and a burn stain on the tip. This is normal and will all buff out. After sanding/buffing I'll need to establish a cutting edge which is not an easy task once it's been heat treated. The cutting edge is currently flat and the thickness of a dime. Then handle material, bolsters, finish, and finally sheath. It'll be a while.

Here is an interesting scale material that I'll be using.... Stabilized Pine Cone, this one is Norwegian Spruce. Both sides are very unique but I think that I'm going to use the center-cut stem face (side 2).
Any thoughts on which side looks better??

Cool pieces Chris, both sides look very interesting. I agree though, the contrast and patterns shown on the inner cut are more what I'd go with too. happy088.gif

Cool stuff! THe contrast of the second set is cool, but unless it is going to be a huge handle, it would seem like it would be hard to get enough in to show it.

Meanwhile....
I'm about to put a Wicked Edge on this Damascus using this system: Wicked Edge
P-33 Damascus by GhostCreekMine, on Flickr

I have a full rack of the diamond stones plus ceramic going down to #1600. It creates a mirror finish cutting edge with precise angles. Even the hardest steel is no match. Scary sharp.

Thank you Denise! You also do some very amazing work and I especially appreciate compliments from artists. worthy.gif
This one just got back from heat-treat and I'm making bolsters for it from 1/4" thick #416 stainless steel.

Thanks!
Well, it took forever and a day but I made two perfectly flat and matching bolsters for the next knife. These will go on the knife with stabilized Pine Cone pictured earlier.
