Perseid meteor shower, 2017 Options

The Perseid meteor shower is underway! Keep your eyes to the night sky!

My wife and I hiked mount Yale this morning. When we were heading to the trail head about 0430, we saw 2! They were amazingly bright and long-lasting. Kept out eyes on the skies until the sun came up, but our back was to the correct direction.

I had to work last night from about 7PM till 4AM this morning. Of course it is always a bummer having to give up your weekend but one of my thoughts was that I might be able to see lots of shooting
stars. I knew I would be spending most of the time staring out the windshield just driving from one place to another. That gave me at least something to focus on and make the night not so bad. So I
began looking and driving, looking and driving....... Clouds! Lots and lots of clouds. Every now and again I would see a teeny-tiny little opening in the sky but it would quickly close, or my direction of
travel changed and I could no longer watch it. That's the way the night went and as I neared my house at the end of my trip I was only focused on getting home.

Then, right in front of me was a bright light.It started out fairly small but quickly grew into a long, streaking ball of fire. As soon as the sky light up I could see that the direction it was traveling on was
clear for quite a ways. It continued to race a crossed the sky and burn brightly with very little change in decent . The tail grew amazingly long which gave it the appearance that it was traveling slower
than any I had seen before. Finally it broke apart and the individual pieces began a shaper decent path before burning out altogether. This Falling Star will be remembered by me as being the longest
shooting star I have ever seen for two reasons; It was the longest as far as times wise goes, "I'd guess it lasted right around 4 seconds" and it had the longest fire trail of any I have seen previously.

A super cool way to end a long night. I hope everybody was able to get out and see at least something, Woody.

We saw a few up on Shavano where we were blessed with a fairly clear sky. Of course I miss the one that the girls were going crazy over. "It just lingered across the sky!"

The coolest I saw lit up its own smoketrail, and I was satisfied after that.

It was cloudy around gunnison last night and the best we got was some lightning and thunder.

Haven't caught any yet, but I'm jumping on the bike at 2-3 this morning, headed to arkansas, so maybe I'll get lucky!
