Hello all, new to the forum here. Live in Fort Collins and grew up in Montana in the 1970's and 80's and regularly prospected for gold and sapphires. I have recently gotten back into prospecting for gold and purchased an Angus MacKirk sluice. I took it out the other day to 7 mile creek in the Manhattan area. I ran eight 5 gallon classified to half inch buckets from a couple of locations. Tons of black sand, but not much in the way of color. Anyway, look forward participating in the forum and learning some tips and tricks.

Welcome to the forums! It would be great to see you out at Clear Creek sometime. A few of us on here are looking for our own claims, and CC has a pretty steady supply of flour gold.

Thanks Emac, I was actually thinking of heading down there this Saturday, but not sure where to go, park etc. I used to belong to RMTH a club in Fort Collins when I was more into metal detecting. Some of the guys used to go there regularly and park in a meat packing parking lot, but I heard that is not longer allowed.

I've read about that meat packing parking spot near the city, but understand that parking there isn't allowed anymore as well. Fortunately for us, we're way further up, west of Golden at the western edge of JeffCo. If you're taking US6 from Golden, you'll pass through 3 tunnels, then shortly after Mayhem Gulch (paved parking area with trails and construction happening now) you'll see a big parking area on your left with a JeffCo Clear Creek sign (from that direction, you only see the back of it, but it's hard to miss). If you go too far, you'll hit a traffic light that splits US6 into US6 and Hwy 119; turn around heading the other way, and you'll see the sign. Good chance you'll see a white jeep with skull decals and a fishy license plate; that's Swizz, and you'll know you're in the right spot.

I generally get up there later than others (and this weekend is still up in the air a bit), but if you see a grey beemer with AF Academy plates, that's me. I've found gold all over the creek, so it's hard to go wrong on where to dig. The best spot I've seen on the creek currently has excavators, jersey barriers and no parking signs...we're working just upstream from that spot.

I also have a friend that's New but itching to get out, maybe we can hook up some time. We are planning first trip to clear creek tomorrow(fri) and can't wait.

Hi KennyRay,

Unfortunately, we are in between the gold fields. Either have to go North to the Douglas creek area in WY, or South to Golden. I prospected 7 mile creek, up the Pourdre river last weekend. I ran 8 classified buckets through my sluice and found about 5 specks of gold, not worth the effort.
