When will the water in CO calm down? |

Went out a couple of days last week to some of my favorite spots. Water was so high and rising on 2 different rivers made it hard to set up a sluice. Some of the bars that I dig from were totally submerged under water. Didn't get as much gold as usual because of this. Had to resort to panning at one spot because there was no where to set up a sluice. Other area, water rose pretty fast and messed up the flow. Got frustraited and resorted to panning again. Still was able to run about 9 buckets through before that happened though. We got more snow in the mountains so I guess the water will keep rising for a few weeks? At least it should redistribute some stream bed material

Absolutely! More snow means more drainage from the mountains and thats natures way of helping us find not only Gold, but other minerals too. In Colorado Springs, next to the air base, there is a rutted road and after each rain we used to go up that road and find crystals all over the place.
Although, it makes for soggy going even for 4 wheel drives eh?!  Oh yeah and it may snow more. What 5 years ago we got like 12 inches on May 14th! -------------------- "And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hell followed with him."

Here's a website that I use frequently in planning prospecting trips. This lists the stream gauges that are real time internet accessible across Colorado. Some historical flow data is also available on this website. That might give you a better idea as to local conditions and historical records for the streams you are working. Check out some of the additional links that are listed on the site as well (SNOTEL, etc.).

another goodsite is, do a search on: waterdata usgs itll give you water levels on almost all rivers in the USA

Drove by the Point Bar Rec area over the weekend, water isn't that high there yet - must have been 50 guys over there running all kinds of sluices and panning!
Off US 50, near Wellsville - on the Arkansas River, which starts rising now with the snow melt, think it calms back down late July. Wish I had the time to stop and shovel a bucket or three.... |
