I've heard there is some good public land up near Breckenridge. Does anyone know exactly where it is?

Lots of places up there-especially French gulch and that area. Prob,em is, you can't park on any of the county roads or they will tow your vehicle (I speak from VERY bitter experience). The "gold Patch" is at the end of French gulch road right before it turns into private property. Most people (including moi) do pretty well there, but, remember the parking......
Also, the campgrounds. Don't forget some of the stories.....

toddarice,

Ok, now you got me curious. Is the "gold patch" past Mineral Hill?

And now that I can't park along side the road, is there room to pull completely off? And pray tell....camping?

Ya, mineral hill is off of French Gulch.
And no, you can't pull off, either. Cost me $350.00 to pull off two years ago.........And a night at the Best Western when they impounded my RV.......And we were right there.........
But there is plenty of camping in Lake Dillon's' campgrounds. We like the one off of Swan Mountain Road. Plus there is Tiger Run RV resort. I don't know how much, we only get propane there.
Also, once you clear Boreas Pass, there is lots of good prospecting to be done. And panning or sluicing. But a tough area. Be extra safe and let someone know exactly where you are. Storms can brew in an instant there.

Okay. Sorry. Forgot to mention Farncomb. Largest and best wire gold ever found. Also, how the vein was finally discovered is a great story. But still a good area for metal detecting. Both sides of the valley.

I'm probably going to be heading up to Breck tomorrow morning. If you can't park on the side of the county road, where do you park? It looks to be a long walk if you have to park in a parking lot in town.

Colorado CJ,

Good question! Also, is all the land along French Gulch east of Breckenridge open to the public? What about camping in that area? Is it permissible? If it's not private then it must be part of the White River NF, which makes it public, correct?

I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that area within the Dillon Ranger District?

Well, heading up to Breck now. I'm going to be using my new X-terra 70 and will probably do a little panning/sluicing too.

Wish me luck! biggrin.gif

Always a day late......
The surrounding land is public (some of it), but the road is a county road and not a FSR-thus the sheriff thinks they own the world....I'm still VERY bitter about my last experience there-and I lived there for 10 years........
Also, by the gold patch, there is a mine on the left (north) where people camp sometimes. The campgrounds are still the best bet, imho.
