Hi All! My wife and I just moved to Fort Garland in the San Luis Valley. We enjoyed rockhounding back east in North Carolina and Tennessee. Are there are good rockhounding locations in or around the San Luis Valley? We enjoy all gems and minerals.
Thanks! Scott |

Scott Scott: I like to work in the Bonanza Caldera that isn't too far from Fort Garland. Much of the area is public land and easily accessible about 15 to 20 miles west of the town of Villa Grove. Lots of metal sulfide ore specimens, quartz crystals and interestingly there is still some fine specimens of rhodochrosite from fluorite bearing veins that have been discarded from old mining activities. Be cautious that there are still some private land inholdings and active mining claims as you rockhound the area. A good place to start out from is the public picnic area that has been built at the old Rawley Tunnel just up the county road from the Town of Bonanza. Good Luck!
